Owls fall to Comets in break from conference play

COLUMBUS, Ohio – After taking the first North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) matchup of the year on Saturday, a 3-0 sweep of Oberlin, the Kenyon College volleyball team made the quick trip to Columbus to take on Capital University on Wednesday Night.

The Owls got behind early in each set and never quite recovered throughout the match, as the Comets took the match 3-0 by way of 25-16, 25-15, and 25-18 games.

Kenyon's (7-12) best set came in the third, as the Owls hung right with the Comets for the opening points, trailing 12-11 nearing the halfway mark in the set, as Mariyah Rumpca-Veronese and Aura Barinas chipped in with two kills apiece. Olivia Gumz added another kill during the run and so did Juliette Tomamichel, who also contributed a service ace.

However, Capital (8-9) charged ahead late in the set as they did all evening, firing off a 12-7 run to end the set 25-18. The 18 points in the third would be Kenyon's highest point total of the evening in a single set, along with kills (11) and hitting percentage (.161).

To open the game, the Owls had several unforced errors that allowed the Comets to jump out to a 15-10 lead midway through the first. In the preliminary game, Kenyon had 28 attack attempts compared to Capital's 20, but eight attack errors and a hitting percentage of .071, the team's lowest of the night, helped the home team out to a 1-0 lead.

More of the same followed in set two, as Capital built a 15-7 lead by way of 29 attack attempts hitting at .379. The set got out of reach as the game carried on, as the Comets fended off any chance at an Owls comeback with a 10-8 run down the stretch to take the second set, and ultimately the match 3-0.

Barinas led the team with nine kills and ten points, as well as placing second on the squad with six digs. Gumz added seven kills and seven points on a very efficient .333 hitting percentage, tying Tomamichel for the highest percentage on the team. Hannah Schwemm led the Owls with 19 assists, while Lauren Blakemore added a team-high seven digs and Rumpca-Veronese tallied one block for the best mark on the day.

Kenyon's record moves to 7-12 overall and remains 1-0 in the NCAC. The Owls return to Tomsich Arena for a conference matchup against Wittenberg University on Saturday, October 5 at 3:00 pm where the team will celebrate the Dig Pink game.
