Tigers deal three-set loss to Owls

GAMBIER, Ohio -- Winner of 26 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) championships, the Wittenberg University volleyball team put its power on display Saturday in Tomsich Arena. The visiting Tigers played solid defense, tallied 41 kills and defeated the host Kenyon College Owls by a 25-18, 25-12, 25-10 final.

Wittenberg whipped up 51 digs, while holding Kenyon to season-low numbers that included 16 kills and a .011 attack percentage.

Despite its struggles, Kenyon held its own in the first set. Wittenberg first raced out to a 9-2 lead, prompting a Kenyon timeout. When the teams returned to the court, the Owls went on a 7-3 run that included kills from Aura Barinas, Juliette Tomamichel and Olivia Gumz. That forced the Tigers to take a timeout of their own.

Out of the timeout, Wittenberg scored twice more to open a five-point lead. The two teams went back-and-forth from there, but Kenyon could not cut the lead to under four points. The Tigers then went on to tally four of the final five points to close out the set.

The Owls stayed with it for the first portion of the second set, trailing by just one at scores of 6-5 and 7-6. After that, Wittenberg rattled off six straight points. Kenyon responded in small spurts, but the Tigers buried the Owls by scoring nine of the set's final 11 points.

Momentum continued to build for Wittenberg, which opened the third set with six straight points. Kenyon temporarily stopped the wave with its first point of the set, but the Owls never got closer than six the rest of the way.

Gumz wound up accounting for half of the Kenyon kill total with eight. Barinas finished with four and Tomamichel had three. Hannah Schwemm led the team with 16 digs and tied Maggie Wolfe for the team lead with six assists. Rachel Ferrara, playing in just her second match of the season, racked up five blocks on the front row.

On the other side of the net, Piper Ricketts did a lot of the damage for the Tigers, as she piled up 18 kills and hit at .375 rate.

The loss dropped Kenyon to 7-13 overall and 1-1 in NCAC play. The Owls won't be back in action until next weekend, when they participate in Calvin University's Midwest Invitational.
