Owls stick tight with Terriers, fall in three

HIRAM, Ohio—Continuing with the fourth out of five road games down the stretch, the Kenyon College volleyball team traveled to Hiram College on Wednesday night for a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) tussle with the Terriers, a match which marks the penultimate away contest for the 2024 season.

After letting the first set slip away, the Owls put together two very competitive sets in the second and third frames, but could not close the deal in the final points, eventually falling 0-3.

Hiram (9-12, 2-2 NCAC) took the match by storm in the first set, jumping off to a 9-0 advantage to start the evening. Kenyon clawed back after the early lead, rattling off an 8-4 run fueled by three kills from Olivia Gumz

However, a .130 hitting percentage and seven attack errors allowed the Terriers to take the first set soundly, 25-16.

In the second, the Owls got their feet under them, taking a 12-11 lead halfway through the middle set by way of three kills from Aura Barinas, while first-year Mariyah Rumpca-Veronese added two of her own.

Kenyon (8-16, 1-3 NCAC)  registered a team-high two blocks and two service aces in the second, as well as firing a match-high .143 hitting percentage. Down the stretch, the second was knotted at 21. However, four straight Hiram points to close it out left the visitors in a 2-0 hole.

The third set resembled the second, as the Owls got off to a great start, sticking with the Terriers through the middle points. With the score tied 15-15, Barinas and Gumz continued their solid stats with two kills apiece. Keyon had its worst hitting percentage in the final set, a .100 mark, and its lowest kill count (10). To close the set and the match, Hiram went on a dominant 10-4 run, taking the final set 24-19 and the match 3-0.

For the match, the Owls registered 35 kills and hit at a .123 clip. Kenyon also dished out 32 assists and had four total blocks. In the end, mistakes such as 18 attack errors and nine reception errors caused the match to swing the other way.

Barinas led the squad with 14.5 total points on a team-high twelve kills to go along with a team-best 1.5 blocks, and a .250 hitting percentage. Gumz and Rumpca-Veronese each had seven points and six kills. Hannah Schwemm dished out 30 assists to lead the Owls, while Lauren Blakemore had two aces and 13 digs.

The loss dropped Kenyon's record to 8-16 overall and 1-3 in the conference. The Owls will travel to Wooster for their final regular-season road test in 2024, with the match underway at 1:00 pm on Saturday, October 26.
