Owls take one, can’t stop Scots in road finale

WOOSTER, Ohio – The Kenyon College women's volleyball team wrapped up its final regular season North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) match on Saturday afternoon, making the short trip to The College of Wooster for an afternoon tilt with both teams are vying for one of the six spots in the NCAC Tournament.

Although the Owls attempted to fight their way back after being down 2-0 by capturing a third-set victory, the Scots fended them off and eventually closed a 3-1 winner.

Kenyon (7-18, 1-4 NCAC) started slowly, allowing the home team to build a decisive lead in the first two sets. In the opening frame, the Owls had just four kills to go along with nine errors, all while hitting at a -0.172 clip. The Fighting Scots took the first set 25-11.

Wooster continued to control the narrative in the second, backing up a team high .455 hitting percentage in the first with a strong .333 number in set two. Kenyon started to get back on track, firing seven kills at a 0.033 clip, but it still was not enough to stop the home team from winning the second set 25-16.

The Owls' offense came to life in the third set of the match, registering team highs in kills (16) and hitting percentage (0.289). Sophia Menke had two early kills in what was a great match for the sophomore, and Kenyon led 4-1 early.

Three straight Wooster points tied the set at four, but the Owls came back with three more, with Menke and Mariyah Rumpca-Veronese getting involved to put the visitors up 7-4. The teams traded points throughout the set, with the visitors maintaining a steady two point advantage and at the midpoint of the third, Kenyon led 15-13.

Kenyon never surrendered the lead in the set, ripping off three more 3-0 runs in the third frame as Menke continued to dominate while Lauren Blakemore added an ace, and the duo of Aura Barinas and Olivia Gumz added kills, eventually taking the third set 25-21.

In the fourth, while Wooster took the lead early, the visitors rallied for five straight points to go up 8-6 in the early stages of the set. The Scots started to build a lead in the middle portion, sprinkling in two four-point runs in between Kenyon points to gain the advantage. The Owls showed great fight facing the final point of the game, rallying from 24-18 with five straight points to make it 24-23, but Wooster was able to secure the final point to close out the set 25-23 and the match 3-1.

Menke led the squad in points (14) and kills, (12) setting career highs in the process. Gumz was second on the team in points (10), while Barinas was second in kills (8).

The loss drops Kenyon's record to 7-18 overall and 1-4 in the conference. With two matches left to play in the regular season, the Owls sit in a tie for sixth with Wooster and Oberlin for the final spot in the NCAC Tournament. The squad has two tough tests to end the season, first taking on Denison University on Tuesday, October 29 at 7:00 pm from Tomsich Arena in Gambier.
