Kenyon downed by undefeated Denison at home

GAMBIER, Ohio – After five straight road or neutral site matches, the Kenyon College volleyball team returned to Tomsich Arena to close out its North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) regular season slate with two home contests, the first on Tuesday night against Denison.

The Owls struggled against the Big Red, who entered the contest undefeated in conference play, and were never truly able to gain any momentum aside from the opening set, eventually falling 3-0.

In the first, Kenyon (7-19, 1-5 NCAC) found itself in a hole early but rallied back for what was the team's best set of the match. An ace from Juliette Tomamichel sandwiched between Hannah Schwemm's and Sophia Menke's kills capped off a 3-0 run that brought the Owls to 5-4 early.

Denison (12-10, 6-0 NCAC) was steady throughout the first, but the home team matched them point for point in the middle parts of the set, as Aura Barinas led the squad with three kills in an 11-9 run to set the score tied at 14.

The Big Red eventually pulled away late in the first, as attack and service errors let the unbeaten conference foe take the first set 25-19. In the opener, the Owls registered their highest kill count in a single set (9).

The second set proved to be the weakest of the evening for the Owls. The Big Red attack garnered a 12-1 lead to start the frame, and never let the home team back in it. Denison amassed an efficient .250 hitting percentage in the second to go along with 12 kills and three aces. Kenyon only fired two kills and had a -.094 mark in the second, letting the set slip away 25-9.

To close the match, the Owls stuck right with the Big Red through the opening points, trailing by just two early as Menke added two kills to make it 12-10. However, Denison ripped off a 13-5 run to close the set 25-15 and the match 3-0.

As a team, Kenyon had 19 kills and a .000 hitting percentage with one ace and two total blocks. Menke led the squad in points (7), kills (7), and hitting percentage (.600), while Tomamichel was the leader in blocks (1) and aces (1). Barinas, Schwemm, and Olivia Gumz were tied atop the team's dig stats, each earning eight.

The loss drops Kenyon's overall record to 7-19 and 1-5 in the conference. The Owls will close the regular season on Saturday, November 2 at noon for a tilt with the DePauw University Tigers in Gambier.
