Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Kapral’s game-winner lifts Kenyon over Capital

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Kenyon College men's lacrosse team made the short trip to Columbus, Ohio on Saturday to take on Capital University for the Comets' home opener from a snowy Bernlohr Stadium.

Despite the Comets pulling ahead four separate times during the chilly contest, the Owls turned on the heat in the fourth, scoring five goals in the final quarter as Mike Kapral hit the game-winner with one second remaining to lift Kenyon over Capital 10-9.

Capital struck first, scoring twice in five minutes after Kenyon turnovers gave the Comets an early possession advantage.

After the Owls got comfortable, Gavin Gumucio netted the first goal for Kenyon, charging from behind the cage for a turnaround score. David Chintala followed suit and tied the game at two 30 seconds later. A shifty two-man game led to a Capital goal in the closing minutes of the first, but Kapral pulled Kenyon even again after a nice find by Rollins Heath tied the game at three.

To open the second, Heath had another nice dish, this time finding Lucas Flynn who put the Owls up 4-3 at 10:01 in the second. Kenyon's scoring would stall for the rest of the half as Capital goalkeeper Luc Kadlic had 12 first-half saves. With four minutes remaining, the Comets tied it up at four, a score that would stand going into halftime.

While the third quarter mirrored the second as both teams netted each one goal, the fourth saw a flurry of offense. Capital started things off at 12:18 to pull ahead 6-5, but Kenyon ripped off a 3-0 run in less than 90 seconds thanks in part to Thomas Nelson's work at the faceoff X. After the Comets took the lead, Nelson won three straight draws leading to goals by Gumucio, Jack McCarren, and Kapral to put Kenyon up 8-6 with 10:52 left to play.

Not to be counted out, the Comets scored twice to tie the game at eight, but Heath fired a missile past the Capital keeper to make it 9-8 with 4:01 left in the game.

Failing to melt down the clock, Capital got the ball back and tied it up 9-9 with 18 seconds left, but Nelson won the ensuing faceoff, giving the Owls one last shot for the game.

Heath got possession, drove down the right side, and flipped a pass over to Kapral, who spun around to shake his defender and bury the game-winning goal for the Kenyon with one second on the clock.

Kapral led the Owls offense with four goals, all to either tie the game or go ahead. Heath added a goal of his own and dished out a game-high three assists. Defensively, Adam Hall had three saves while Nelson went 18-for-23 on faceoffs with 13 groundballs.

The win moves Kenyon to 3-0 on the young 2024 season. The Owls return to Gambier on Wednesday, February 28th at 3:30 pm to take on Albion College from The Field at Benson Bowl.
