Kenyon builds early lead, Marietta marches back

MARIETTA, Ohio – The Kenyon College baseball team returned to Gambier after its 13-game schedule in Florida for spring break, where the team went 10-3. The Owls made the short trip South to take on the Marietta College Pioneers for its first Ohio game in nearly a month.

Although Kenyon built a 6-0 lead through six innings with shutout pitching and smart base running, Marietta scored seven unanswered runs in the final three innings to complete the 7-6 comeback.

Theo Canning got the nod as the Owls' starting pitcher and dealt up a strong outing, firing off six shutout innings with four hits and one strikeout in 77 pitches. Kenyon added some run support in the middle innings, as Drew Robinson scored on a wild pitch and Dustin Lee singled to bring Edwin Groff home in the fourth.

In the top of the fifth, Ben Resnick and Ben Zimmerman added two more runs, both scoring on fielding errors. Tripper Capps reached on a fielder's choice on the next at-bat, scoring Robinson and Malcolm Gaynor. At the end of the fifth frame, the Owls were up 6-0 and looked dominant.

Marietta (8-8) broke through in the bottom of the seventh after a leadoff walk and a double ended Canning's day. On the next at-bat, the Pioneers sent a two-run single up the middle to cut into Kenyon's lead. The home team would follow it up with two more runs in the bottom of the eighth to bring the score to 6-4.

Kenyon was held scoreless for the final three innings, giving Marietta one last chance to score in the bottom of the ninth. With two outs and the bases loaded, Ben Kaplin hit a three-run double to left center to walk it off for a Pioneer win.

The Owls' record drops to 12-4 on the season. Kenyon will now gear up for the home opener from McCloskey Field on Tuesday, March 26, where the team will battle with Capital University for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm.
