Tartans sweep Owls to snap win streak

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Playing in its first contest since returning from a 14-game slate in South Carolina for spring break, the Kenyon College softball team traveled to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to face Carnegie Mellon on Saturday afternoon for a chilly doubleheader.

Despite scoring ten or more runs in three straight games, the Owls offense couldn't keep up with the Tartans, falling 4-1 in the first game and 8-1 in the second to snap an eight-game win streak.

Kylie Hamm got the start for the Owls in game one and continued to impress in the early innings coming off of her North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Athlete of the Week honor. She held the Tartans to one run with three strikeouts in the first three innings.

In the bottom of the fourth, Carnegie Mellon (5-5) broke through for three runs, scoring on a single, RBI groundout, and a throwing error to take a 4-0 lead, and never looked back.

Maddie Friday tried to spark a comeback in the next half-inning, sending a solo homer to center field, but Kenyon (10-6) could not find any more runs, registering three hits for the game and falling 4-1.

The Owls' offensive woes continued into game two, as the Tartans opened up a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second, ending starting pitcher Allison McCutchen's day early.

Similar to the first game, Kenyon responded in the next half-inning, as Natalya Delsante singled down the infield line to score Brooke Avila, but it would prove to be the team's only run of the second game, failing to spark a comeback again.

Carnegie Mellon scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth and one run in the bottom of the fifth to take an 8-1 lead, a mark which would stand to finish the game despite Kenyon outhitting the home team 6-4.

Kayla Montgomery led the Owls' offense for both games, registering two hits and an RBI. Hamm led all pitchers with four strikeouts, while McCutchen, Amanda Harris, and Jillian Messinger punched out one batter apiece.

Kenyon's record drops to 10-6 on the season, snapping the team's eight-game win streak. The Owls have a quick turnaround and will stay in Pennsylvania to take on The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm.
