Game Recap: Softball |

Owls split with Bobcats in two comeback efforts

GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Kenyon College softball team stayed in Pennsylvania for its second doubleheader in as many days, making the short trip to take on the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg for two neutral site games held at Seton Hill University.

Although the Bobcats won the first contest in a 5-4 extra-innings come-from-behind victory, the Owls fired off a comeback of its own in the second game, scoring 13 straight runs after being down 8-1 in the first inning to win the second game 16-9 and split the doubleheader.

In the first game, Kenyon scored two runs in the top of the first, matching its total from both matchups combined yesterday against Carnegie Mellon. Maeve McLaughlin got things started with an RBI groundout, scoring Arianna Jalomo. On the next at-bat, Madison Buckwalter singled to center field to bring Natalya Delsante home to give the Owls a 2-0 lead early.

The Bobcats came back in the top of the second and tied the game at two, getting two RBI singles off of starting pitcher Kylie Hamm

Kenyon took back the lead back in the next half-inning, as Keala Montgomery hit a looping single to center, sending McLaughlin home. Montgomery added her team-high second RBI of the game and gave the Owls some insurance in the top of the fifth, where her flyout allowed Delsante to tag up and put Kenyon ahead 4-2.

Just as Greensburg did in the second, the home team fired off two more runs and tied the game at four in the bottom of the fifth, a score that would extend into extra innings. After Kenyon failed to convert in the top of the eight, the Bobcats sent a single into left field, bringing the runner on third home to win the game 5-4.

Game two also started in the Owls' favor, gaining a 1-0 lead after three outs. However, the Bobcats answered again with an eight-run first to take a commanding lead. Although Kenyon put two on the board in the second, Greensburg entered the fourth with a 9-3 advantage, but the visitors would quickly dial up an answer of their own.

To start the inning, Maddie Friday ripped a leadoff double to put the Owls in scoring position. She would score on the next at-bat by way of a throwing error to give Kenyon a much-needed spark on offense. Jalomo would send home Sophia Lynch next, and Celia Torino singled up the middle to score two more. Montgomery's single added another run as Torino circled the bags to bring the deficit to 9-8 in just one half-inning.

Two innings later, Kenyon scored seven more runs to take its first lead since the top of the first. On defense, the Owls held the Bobcats scoreless for the final four innings, thanks to a stellar relief outing from Allison McCutchen. Entering in the bottom of the first and facing a six-run deficit, the sophomore faced 28 batters from the bullpen and gave up four hits with no earned runs.

The Owls added one more in the top of the seventh to put the finishing touches on the comeback, scoring 13 straight runs in the 16-9 win. It's the most runs in a single game since the 2022 season opener, where the squad scored 21.

Jalomo and Montgomery led the Owls' offense for the afternoon, each batting in five runs, recording five and four hits respectively. McCutchen headlined the pitching staff with 10 combined innings of work, adding five strikeouts with five hits.

Kenyon's record moves to 11-7 on the season. The Owls return to Gambier for the 2024 home opener, where the team will battle with the Capital University Comets for a doubleheader starting at 3:30 pm.
