Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Kenyon can’t control Chapman in ranked match

ORANGE, Calif. – Playing in a second ranked matchup in as many days, the #23 Kenyon College men's tennis team made the short trip North to Orange, California yesterday to take on the #35 Chapman University Panthers.

In a tough contest that saw several close pairings and multiple extra set matches, the Panthers got the best of the Owls, topping Kenyon 7-2.

Chapman rallied early in the doubles matches, in what was the season and home opener for the Panthers. At No. 1, the Panthers took down Paulo Pocasangre Kreling and Eliezer Gonzalez 8-3 to start the day. A similar result played out in the No. 2 and 3 matches, as Gianluca Bocanegra and Christophe Leblanc fell 8-5 while Rishil Kondapaneni and Eric Zhang fell 8-4. The Panthers pounced on the Owls to build a 3-0 lead after doubles.

Kenyon was able to bounce back in the No. 2 and 3 singles matches, as Kondapaneni impressed in No. 2. He topped his opponent 6-1 and 6-3 to pick up the first win of the day. In the No. 3 match, Bocanegra won against a player who was fresh from not competing in the doubles portion. He posted back-to-back 6-3 sets to will the Owls to 3-2 on the afternoon. However, those wins would be Kenyon's last of the match.

Bookending the No. 2 and 3 matches, both the No. 1 and No. 4 pairings went to a third set, but the Owls could not emerge victorious in either one. Pocasangre Kreling lost 7-5 in his first set, came back with a 7-5 win in the second, but fell in the third 10-6 in the No. 1 slot. Gonzalez got out to a 6-2 win in his first set of the No. 4 match, but dropped two straight 6-4 and 10-3 to fall in the end. Zhang and Rakkan Audeh also fell in their respective matches in the No. 5 and No. 6 positions in two sets to set the final at 7-2.

Kenyon's record moves to 3-2 on the young season, and the team gets a couple days of rest before taking on another ranked opponent, the #15 Pomona Pitzer Sagehens on Friday, March 8 at 7:00 pm (4:00 pm PST) from Claremont, California.
