Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Owls can’t dial up comeback against Diplomats

LANCASTER, Pa. – The Kenyon College men's lacrosse team stayed in Pennsylvania for another ranked matchup, taking on No. 22 Franklin & Marshall College on a rainy Saturday afternoon.

Despite the Owls' best efforts to make a comeback, tying the game four separate times after losing the lead at the beginning of the second quarter, the Diplomats never surrendered and netted the game-clinching goal with 6.9 seconds left on the clock to hand Kenyon its second loss of the season.

Both offenses were slow to score at the start, but it was Kenyon (5-2) who struck first after Gavin Gumucio netted his ninth goal of the season in transition by way of a Joe Sikora assist at 9:10 in the first. Franklin & Marshall scored the next two to capture the lead, but Rollins Heath and David Chintala each found the back of the net in the final minute of the opening quarter to put the Owls up 3-2 after one.

The Diplomats opened the second by going on another two-goal streak to regain a 4-3 lead at 9:22 remaining in the half. Heath hit the equalizer for his second of the day at 8:07, and that's how the score would stay until 13 seconds remaining in the half, where Franklin & Marshall (5-1) went up 5-4 to end the first 30 minutes.

In the second half, Kenyon had its fair share of chances to take the lead, but whenever the Owls scored to cut the lead or tie the game, the Diplomats responded to stop any scoring runs. Forty seconds into the half, Heath hit his third of the day with a Tanner Lewis assist to tie the game at five, but Franklin & Marshall came back three minutes later to go ahead 6-5.

Hill Carter fired a rocket later in the quarter to tie it 6-6, but the Diplomats scored twice in two minutes to go up 8-6 with 5:04 remaining, putting a damper on the Owls' momentum. Before the end of the quarter, however, Chintala hit a deep sidearm shot to pull Kenyon within one to end the third.

Scoring slowed in the fourth as the weather intensified, making ball security matter much more. The Dips scored to regain a two-goal lead early in the quarter, but Heath and Mike Kapral hit big shots to tie the game at nine with 6:54 to play.

In the final minutes, the Owls had great chances to take the lead, including a man-up possession. With 1:04 left on the clock, Adam Hall made a huge save to give Kenyon one last opportunity. Unfortunately, a turnover in the clear gave the ball back to Franklin & Marshall, who scored the winning goal with 6.9 seconds to play to lock up the 10-9 defeat.

Overall, Kenyon had the statistics to win, including controlling the ground game 31-to-25 and winning 19-of-23 faceoffs thanks to Thomas Nelson. Hall added 12 saves in net, but 12 uncaused turnovers out of 20 on the day proved to be the difference.

The Owls' record drops to 5-2 as the squad returns to Gambier for two home games, first taking on Adrian College on Wednesday, March 13 at 4:00 pm from The Field at Benson Bowl.
