Owls drop two tight tilts with Tigers

GAMBIER, Ohio – Two tight contests took place this afternoon as the Kenyon College softball team hosted Wittenberg University for a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) doubleheader, as both games were decided by one run.

However, the Owls came out on the losing end of both contests, losing 4-3 in extra innings in game one, while failing to score the tying run in the bottom of the seventh in game two for another 4-3 loss.

Kenyon struck first in game one, looking to put an end to Wittenberg's three-game win streak. In the bottom of the third, Maeve McLaughlin singled to bring Madison Buckwalter home after stealing second to get herself in scoring position. The Tigers answered in the top of the fourth, but the Owls tacked on two more in the bottom of the fifth, as Brooke Avila's double scored McLaughlin and Keala Montgomery to put the home team up 3-1.

Wittenberg scored one run in the sixth and seventh innings to tie it up at three and send game one into extra innings. After both teams failed to score in the eighth, the Tigers broke through in the ninth with an RBI grounder through the left side of the infield, which moved to be the game-winning run.

Kylie Hamm got the nod in the circle for Kenyon, and she pitched all nine innings, facing 40 at-bats while striking out 6 and surrendering 12 hits.

Amanda Harris started game two, but two Tigers runs in the first and second innings ended her day down 2-0. Jillian Messinger entered in relief and pitched the final five innings, striking out three and giving the Owls time to build a comeback.

The first part of that comeback came in the bottom of the fourth, when Maddie Friday hit a sacrifice fly to right field, long enough to score Montgomery. On the next at-bat, Allison McCutchen fired a single to third base, which brought Buckwalter home to bring Kenyon within one at 3-2.

One half-inning later, Wittenberg added some insurance to restore the two-run lead, which held until the bottom of the seventh. After the Owls were down to their last out, Arianna Jalomo sent a floater to right field and advanced to second on some smart baserunning. Montgomery singled to bring her home on the next at bat, to put the score 4-3, while also moving to second on the throw to the plate.

With Kenyon just 60 feet away from tying it up, Buckwalter stepped to the plate and worked a great at bat to a 3-2 count, but watched strike three go by to lock up the 4-3 loss.

Kenyon's record moves to 14-16 overall and 1-7 in the conference. The Owls are back in action on Saturday, April 27 for a road doubleheader against the Hiram College Terriers beginning at 1:00 pm.
