Owls take two from Terriers in final road test

HIRAM, Ohio – The Kenyon College baseball team traveled to face Hiram College in the squad's final regular season road game of the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) schedule. Vying for one of the top four spots in the conference in order to make the NCAC Tournament, the Owls took care of business on Tuesday afternoon and defeated the Terriers 10-2 in game one and 15-5 in game two.

The Kenyon offense started early in game one, as Ben Nash homered to right field to put the visitors on the board at just the second at-bat of the game. Later in the inning, Malcolm Gaynor capitalized on a Hiram throwing error and advanced all the way to third, where Tripper Capps would single to bring him home to put the Owls up 2-0.

Peyton Hodges started at the mound and dealt five innings of excellent work, throwing 57 pitches while allowing one run on four hits. By the time he exited in the sixth, Kenyon was up 6-1 as two sacrifice flies, an RBI single, and a throwing error put four on the board for the Owls.

In the final three innings, the Kenyon offense did not slow down. Gio Giuliani singled to send Luke Meister home in the seventh, while Gaynor homered to bring home Nash in the eighth. Parker Gibbons put the finishing touches on the win, sending home Giuliani in the ninth to finish the 10-run outing from the Owls.

Jack Enger tossed the final four innings of work for Kenyon, striking out four with three hits to get the save.

The Owls started game two like game one, building a 3-0 lead through two innings. This time, however, the Terriers responded and scored two runs in the bottom of the third to come within one. Dustin Lee sent a rocket double in the gap to score Gaynor and Nash in the top of the fourth to take a 5-3 lead, but the Terriers scored two of their own in the bottom of the inning to tie the contest at five.

Kenyon answered decisively, dropping eight runs in the top of the fifth to put the game entirely out of reach. Gibbons and Nate Rosen got things started, firing off back-to-back hits to bring in one run each. Two batters later, Gaynor and Lee then ripped consecutive hits leading to RBIs to put the Owls ahead 9-5. During Luke Meister's at-bat, a wild pitch brought Gaynor home, while Meister sent a single to score Lee. Finally, Ben Resnick finished things off with a two-run single. Two pitching changes, eight hits, and eight runs later, the Owls were up 13-5. Two more runs in the seventh ended the game early at 15-5, securing the sweep.

Jackson Yelland got the start for Kenyon, while Noah Rosenberg, Theo Canning, and Christian Harris combined in relief, with Canning getting the win. The group combined for nine strikeouts with eight hits and three walks. Offensively, the Owls set a season-high with 19 hits in game two.

Kenyon's record improves to 21-12 overall and 8-6 in the NCAC, putting the team fourth in the conference standings with one doubleheader left to play. First, the Owls will return to Gambier to take on Capital University in a non-conference contest on Wednesday, May 4 at 4:00 pm.
