McCarren fires four, Kenyon overpowers Oberlin

GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College men's lacrosse team hosted the Oberlin College Yeomen on Tuesday afternoon for a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) matchup from The Field at Benson Bowl, as the Owls looked to improve its conference record to above .500 on the season.

Led by sophomore midfielder Jack McCarren's career-high four goals, the home team did just that, going on separate three-goal scoring runs to bookend contest, besting the Yeomen 14-8.

McCarren put Kenyon (8-4, 2-1 NCAC) ahead early, cashing in on two deep shots to go along with David Chintala's goal to give the Owls a 3-0 advantage with 7:06 remaining in the first quarter. Mike Kapral found his first goal at 1:59 in the first, but the Yeomen would score two of the last three goals to set the 4-2 score after one.

The Owls looked in control in the second, as Kapral and Chintala each scored their second tallies of the afternoon to go up 6-2 with 4:04 to play in the half. Oberlin (8-4, 2-2 NCAC) responded again to stay within reach at 5:57, setting up a 6-3 halftime lead for Kenyon.

Just as he did to open the first half, McCarren fired a third long one just 40 seconds into the third quarter to restore Kenyon's four-goal lead, but Oberlin had another answer, this time netting three straight goals to put the Yeomen right back in the mix, trailing 7-6 with 8:47 in the third.

However, the Owls pulled away in the latter part of the third and into the fourth quarter, ending the game on a 7-2 scoring run. Tanner Lewis got things started as Kenyon took command of the game, while Gumucio and Chintala followed to end the third up 10-6.

In the fourth, Miles Malawer got his fourth goal of the season, while Rollins Heath, McCarren, and Gumucio all continued their stat lines to cement the 14-8 victory.

McCarren led Kenyon with four goals, while Heath dished a career-high four assists. On the defensive end, Adam Hall had 11 saves while Joe Sikora caused a team-high four turnovers. Thomas Nelson gave the Owls valuable possessions throughout the game, winning 15-of-22 (68.1 percent) faceoffs.

Kenyon improves to 8-4 on the season and 2-1 in the NCAC. Up next, the Owls will travel to Delaware, Ohio on Saturday, April 13 to take on the Ohio Wesleyan University Battling Bishops at 7:30 pm.
