Lazaridou earns spot in NCAA Singles Championship

INDIANAPOLIS -- The NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Committee announced Wednesday evening the individuals who will compete in the singles and doubles competitions of the 2024 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championships. Among the singles selections was Kenyon College sophomore Eleni Lazaridou.

In the doubles team selections, Lazaridou and classmate Allaire Berl were the first pairing left off the bracket. They were, however, declared the first alternate team. If any one of the 16 participating doubles teams scratches, the Kenyon duo has dibs to occupy the empty spot.

Lazaridou and Berl are 12-5 in doubles competition this season and are currently ranked as the No. 23 pairing in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) NCAA Division III ranking. The same two made the NCAA Doubles Championship last season as first-years and made it to the quarterfinal round before bowing out.

In singles play, the upcoming championship will be Lazaridou's second straight appearance. One year ago, she won three straight matches and got into the semifinal round before being eliminated.

Like previous seasons, the NCAA Singles Championship consists of a bracket of 32 NCAA Division III student-athletes. The selection of individuals (and doubles teams) for the Championship was based on won-lost record, strength of schedule, and eligibility and availability of student-athletes.

Currently, Lazaridou has a 19-4 singles record and owns the No. 30 spot in the ITA's NCAA Division III singles ranking. She's also ranked as the No. 4 player in the ITA's Central Region and at No. 3 in NCAA Region V.

Lazaridou, Berl and the rest of the Kenyon women's team are coming off a win over Denison University in the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament. That victory gave the Owls an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III Team Championship and they'll start play tomorrow against Luther College at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in Saint Louis, Missouri.

Following the NCAA Team Championship, the Singles and Doubles Championships will take place May 25-27, also at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in Saint Louis. The draw for those championship brackets will be completed by the NCAA Women's Tennis Committee and will be released a day before competition begins.
