Owls battle back in second half to draw Barons

GAMBIER, Ohio – After returning from an early season road trip and rising to fifth in the United Soccer Coaches Poll, the Kenyon College men's soccer team took on the unbeaten Franciscan University Barons on Saturday afternoon from a sunny Mavec Field.

The Owls faced a 2-0 deficit after 66 minutes of play, but a penalty kick goal from Alem Duratovic shortly after and a crafty move from Jacob Lazarus in the 81st minute helped the home team sneak away with a 2-2 draw.

Franciscan (3-0-2) got on the board first in the 22nd minute, as Ryan Miller stepped up to take a penalty kick, driving a low ball past Jack Pedreschi who nearly came up with the tough save.

Besides the penalty kick, both teams kept relatively quiet for the rest of the half, registering just four shots per side while the Barons had a slight edge in corners (3-2) and shots on goal (2-1).

In the second half, the visitors turned up the volume, when a nice header from a Franciscan forward evaded the Owls' defense and came right to Lucas Cross, who ripped a shot to the top left corner to send the Barons up 2-0 with 24 minutes to play.

Kenyon (3-0-2) drove right down the field on the ensuing kickoff, as Gabriel Romanenko threaded a great ball to Lazarus in the box, who took a hard foul resulting in a penalty kick. Two Franciscan yellow cards ensued, while Duratovic stepped in to spark the home team's comeback, calmly shaping a shot into the bottom right corner to set the score 2-1.

The Owls' offense went on a tear after the score, firing 15 shots in the second half en route to a 19-shot outing, the team's highest output of the season. Duratovic had two great chances to tie the game up, each thwarted by the Barons goalkeeper.

However, with under 10 minutes to play, Kenyon got its equalizer. Gerardo Martinez lofted a ball to Lazarus after a Franciscan turnover, and the senior fielded the pass, made a move to ditch his defender, and buried the goal to tie the game at two.

During the final minutes of play, the Owls had shots from Romanenko and Lawrence Taylor, but neither found the cage, finalizing the 2-2 tie.

Pedreschi kept the home team close throughout the game, registering three saves.

Kenyon's record moves to 3-0-2 on the season. The Owls are back in action on Wednesday, September 18, where they will host the Anderson University Ravens at 5:15 pm from Gambier.
