Owls’ upset bid foiled by missed opportunities

GRANVILLE, Ohio -- The Kenyon College football team took to the road Saturday and put itself in position to upset the Denison University Big Red. The opportunities created by the Owls, however, were thwarted by miscues and penalties, resulting in a 14-0 conference loss at Deeds Field-Piper Stadium.

For the first 38 minutes of the game, the two teams battled to a scoreless draw. The defensive units dominated the start, so much so that first-half play witnessed just 126 yards of total offense. Kenyon (1-2, 0-1 NCAC) had just four rushing yards and 60 passing yards, while Denison (1-2, 1-0 NCAC) had only nine rushing yards and 53 passing yards.

During that drought, Kenyon had one legitimate chance to score. On the Owls' final drive of the half, they marched from their own 35-yard line to the Denison 28-yard line. With 47 seconds remaining, Tyler Bell came off the sideline to kick a field goal, but it sailed wide right.

It wasn't until there was 6:04 left on the third-quarter clock that points were scored. Denison, starting on its own 30-yard line, pieced together a seven-play 73-yard scoring drive. The two big plays in the drive were a 36-yard pass from Tyler Green to Billy Guzzo and a 23-yard touchdown run from back-up quarterback Cade Nowik, who just entered the game to replace Green, who exited with an injury.

The ensuing possession saw Kenyon benefit from a couple of pass interference calls on Big Red defensive backs. Completed passes to Brendan Comerford and Dylan Carlquist kept the drive going and a 12-yard rush from quarterback Park Penrod put the Owls on the Denison 11-yard line.

On the next snap, Drake Lewis ran it into the end zone, only to have the play called back due to a holding penalty. The offense stalled from there and a 35-yard field goal attempt veered left, leaving the Owls empty handed.

The Kenyon offense, still only trailing by seven points, had three more possessions to try to tie the game, but they ended with a punt, a turnover on downs, and a strip sack.

Denison, with 1:21 left in the game, used the great field position from the strip sack to have Nowick run in his second score of the day, this time from three yards out.

The Owls finished the game with 113 yards of offense, 32 on the ground and 81 in the air. Denison had the better second half and completed the game with 236 yards of offense, 124 through rushing and 112 through passing.

Penrod went 10-of-37 for the Owls, while Lewis was the leading rusher with 28 yards on 12 carries. Comerford topped the receiving corps with four catches for 31 yards. On the other side of the ball, Kenyon's impressive defensive effort was paced by Andy Canonico and Dominic Simpson, who shared the team lead with eight tackles apiece. Canonico had one of five sacks for the Owls and both Jackson Belyn and Andy Melian had interceptions for Kenyon.

The Owls will be back at McBride Field next week, hosting The College of Wooster for Homecoming Weekend in Gambier.
