Owls record Homecoming sweep against Oberlin

GAMBIER, Ohio -- Mariyah Rumpca-Veronese, a first-year, led the Kenyon College attack Saturday and helped lift the Owls volleyball team to a 25-21, 25-18, 25-21 conference win over the Oberlin College Yeowomen during Homecoming Weekend.

The match was the first North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) contest of the season for both teams. The win moved Kenyon to 7-11 overall (1-0 NCAC) and loss dropped Oberlin to 2-10 overall (0-1 NCAC).

Rumpca-Veronese set the tone by racking up a match-high 12 kills with just two errors. She hit a .400 rate and also chalked up one block and three digs.

From the start, Rumpca-Veronese was ready to go, throwing down kills for the first two points of the match. Oberlin, which rarely held a lead throughout the morning, fired back with a run of seven straight points, which prompted an early Kenyon timeout.

The Owls regrouped and caught the Yeowomen at 13-13. A few moments later, Rumpca-Veronese tallied two more kills giving Kenyon a 16-15 lead, an edge the Owls would not relinquish. A four-point surge later sealed the deal for Kenyon.

That momentum carried into the second set for Kenyon. The Owls jumped ahead 3-0, again starting with two kills from Rumpca-Veronese. Oberlin got as close as two points at 10-8, but Kenyon went on a 7-0 run that was the turning point of the set. The run was fueled by five Oberlin attack errors and a pair of Kenyon kills from Aura Barinas.

The third set was a little more closely contested as Oberlin built its first lead since the first set. The Yeowomen worked for slight advantages of 6-5 and 10-8, before Kenyon took over for good. The Owls, however, had more difficulty shaking the Yeowomen this time around. Through the middle portion of the match, no team led by more than three points and the score wound up tied seven different times.

With the set square at 14-14, Kenyon created some breathing room with a 6-1 run that featured three kills from Rumpca-Veronese and one each from Barinas and Juliette Tomamichel, who also added a service ace.

Behind Rumpca-Veronese's dozen kills, Barinas ended up with nine and Olivia Gumz notched five. Barinas led the team with 15 digs. Arianna Flota added 12 and Hannah Schwemm, who also had a team-high 13 assists, recorded 11 digs.

Kenyon will revert back to non-conference play in its next match, which will be held Wednesday evening at Capital University.
