Owls go the distance twice more, split two at Behrend

ERIE, Pa. -- After playing five sets Wednesday night at home, the Kenyon College volleyball team played through two more five-set matches Friday, the first day of the two-day Penn State Behrend Invitational. In the first match, the Owls fell 3-2 to Fredonia State University, but then bounced back in the second match, toppling Geneva University, 3-2.

The three consecutive five-set matches marked a first for Kenyon since the NCAA installed rally scoring in the 2001 season.

Junior Aura Barinas and sophomore Olivia Gumz had no issues working overtime for the Owls. The pair took control of that second match against Geneva, leading Kenyon (1-5) to its first win of the young season. Both players registered personal, single-match records in kills. Barinas led all players with 25 kills and a solid .360 attack percentage, while Gumz followed up with 16 kills and a .261 attack percentage. Barinas' output was the fourth best, five-set match total in program history.

Kenyon started with a 25-22 set one win over the Golden Tornadoes, who quickly responded by winning the next two sets. The third set, which went 32-30 in favor of Geneva, could have been the turning point of the match, but Kenyon refused to throw in the towel.

The Owls stormed back taking the fourth set 25-15. In that set, Barinas came alive and threw down four early kills to stake Kenyon to a 7-0 lead. She added four more kills later and thrust Kenyon into a fifth set.

In that fifth and deciding set, Geneva built an early 4-1 lead, but a kill by Gumz and a pair of blocks from Sophia Menke squared things up at 5-5. From there, the teams went back-and-forth until the score was locked at 9-9.

At that point, Kenyon pulled away to secure the win. A service ace from Jordan Deane put Kenyon ahead 11-9 and, a little later, Gumz and Mariyah Rumpca-Veronese scored kills to give the Owls a 14-10 edge. Gumz then smashed her third kill of the set to make things final.

Menke ended up with eight blocks in the match, while Hannah Schwemm tallied 49 assists and Lauren Blakemore was in position to record 27 digs.

In the first match against Fredonia, Kenyon built momentum early, claiming the first two sets by scores of 25-21 and 25-13. Fredonia, however, flipped the switch from there, taking the final three sets by scores of 25-11, 25-17 and 15-10.

Three service aces from Barinas, combined with three Fredonia errors, put Kenyon ahead 6-0 from the start. The errors kept piling up for the Blue Devils and the Owls took full advantage. Over the course of the first two sets, Fredonia had 16 attack errors and nine service errors.

When the Blue Devils cleaned things up, they reversed their course. Over the final three sets, Fredonia trimmed back its mistakes to 10 attack errors and seven service errors.

Kenyon wound up hitting .143 as a team with 33 kills throughout the match. Fredonia put up a .161 attack percentage with a total of 46 kills.

Individually, Kenyon got a match-high nine kills from Gumz and seven each from Barinas and Menke. Juliette Tomamichel racked up six blocks, Schwemm dished out 21 assists and Arianna Flota led the back row with nine digs.

Tomorrow the Owls will return to the court for the second day of Invitational play. They'll battle host Penn State Behrend at 10 a.m. and then take on Houghton University at 2 p.m.
