Owls stop Scots to start final homestand

GAMBIER, Ohio – As the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) standings grow tighter each day, the Kenyon College field hockey team closes out the regular season with three straight conference home games, the first of which against The College of Wooster on Wednesday afternoon from the Field at Benson Bowl.

After the Scots tied the game in the third quarter, junior Gigi Johnson netted the game winner early in the fourth, and the defense held on for the team's sixth conference win of the season 2-1.

Both teams traded three shots in the first quarter, but all of Wooster's found the cage, testing starting goalkeeper Lucy Baker early on. Kenyon's lone shot on goal came from Maren Lawrence

Halfway through the second, the Owls broke through. A penalty corner gave Casey Master the ball at the top of the arc, who slotted a pass to Olivia Wangerow for a quick shot that was knocked away. Wangerow picked up her own rebound and drove right, winding up for a rocket though the Scots keeper's five hole for the score. The goal marks the first of her career.

Kenyon took the 1-0 lead to halftime, but Wooster found the tying goal less than a minute into the third quarter by way of a turnover deep in the defensive end. Each quad mustered two shots on goal in the third, but heading into the final 15 the score remained 1-1.

With just over 12 minutes to play, the Owls netted the game winner on a tremendous passing play from end to end. Riley Chlupsa lofted a ball that found Henny Maher along the sideline near the offensive zone. Maher advanced the ball and wound up a cross field pass that perfectly found Johnson unguarded on the back post. Johnson flipped a shot off of her backhand and in the near side of the net for the first goal of her career.

After a tense remainder of the quarter that saw three corners and two shots on goal for the Scots, the Owls held on for the valuable conference victory.

Lawrence led the team in shots on goal, while her, Wangerow and Abby Golub each fired two on net. Baker made three saves in the start, while Sofia Chaves made two in relief.

The Owls move to 5-9 on the season and 5-2 in the conference. Up next, Kenyon will welcome the NCAC's number one seeded DePauw University on Saturday, October 25 at noon from Gambier.
