Kenyon field hockey falls in NCAC semifinal

DELAWARE, Ohio – The Kenyon College field hockey team saw its season come to an end Wednesday afternoon, falling 1-0 to Ohio Wesleyan University in the semifinal round of the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Tournament at Selby Stadium.

The Owls (8-9, 7-3 NCAC) battled the Battling Bishops (15-4, 8-2 NCAC) throughout the contest, keeping the game scoreless through the first two quarters before Ohio Wesleyan broke through early in the second half in a rain-drenched contest.

Ohio Wesleyan's Mattison Hyland scored the game's only goal at the 31:59 mark of the third quarter, finding the back of the net on an unassisted effort to give the Battling Bishops a 1-0 advantage.

Kenyon looked to find an equalizer in the final two quarters but was unable to capitalize on its opportunities. The Owls recorded five shots during the contest, with Hendrika Maher leading the way with two attempts. Gigi Johnson added two shots, while Maren Lawrence recorded one.

Defensively, goalkeeper Sofia Chaves turned in a strong performance, finishing with seven saves on eight shots on goal. Her efforts helped keep Kenyon within striking distance throughout the afternoon.

Ohio Wesleyan finished with a 17-5 advantage in shots and held a 6-2 edge in penalty corners. Battling Bishops goalkeeper Payton Mindel made one save to preserve the shutout.

Despite the setback, Kenyon put together a competitive effort against one of the conference's top teams, holding Ohio Wesleyan to a single goal in the postseason matchup.
