Tigers take down Owls, stage set for next Saturday

GAMBIER, Ohio – Playing in its penultimate game of the 2025 regular season and looking to secure a spot in the North Coast Athletic Conference playoffs, the Kenyon College field hockey team took on DePauw University in a fiercely fought game on Saturday afternoon from the Field at Benson Bowl.

The Tigers pounced on the Owls from the opening faceoff, taking the game 4-0 and setting up a win or go home next weekend.

After a flurry of chances to start the game, DePauw broke through. Four minutes into the contest, Hailey Nowak scored with a well-placed strike, beating starting goalkeeper Sofia Chaves

Maren Lawrence and Rigby Zentner each found the cage with opportunities in the first, but could not get past the Tiger defense and keeper Olivia Streifel. Nowak added her second of the day at 9:48 in the first to give her team a 2-0 lead.

Early in the second, Hannah Zaiser scored to make it 3-0 as the Tigers continued to apply pressure. Just before halftime, Nowak converted on a penalty stroke to get the team's fourth goal and her hat trick.

After halftime, Kenyon's defense locked down the DePauw offense, who registered 20 shots for the game. Lucy Baker, who replaced Chaves after the first quarter, made six saves in relief, which kept the tally on the scoreboard to a minimum.

The Owls struggled to connect with shots on goal in the second half, as Abby Golub was the team's only attempt in the third. Despite allowing no goals in the final 30 minutes, DePauw's deficit was too much to overcome in the end.

Kenyon's record falls to 5-10 overall and 5-3 in the conference. The stage is now set for a win and get in scenario with the Wittenberg University Tigers, who come to Gambier for the final game of the regular season on Saturday, November 1 at noon.
