Kenyon drops first conference road test to Wittenberg

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – After picking up its first North Coast Athletic Conference win of the season last weekend against The College of Wooster, the Kenyon College volleyball team hit the road to take on Wittenberg University on Saturday afternoon.

The Owls could not get anything going offensively for the match as the team got later into sets, allowing the Tigers to take each set 25-16 and the afternoon 3-0.

Kenyon's best set offensively came in the first, amassing a team-high nine kills and a .179 hitting percentage. The Owls hung right with the Tigers early on in the first, taking an 11-10 lead after a kill from Mariyah Rumpca-Veronese, who had four in the first.

However, the visitors' success would stop there, as Wittenberg rattled off a 15-5 run after that point to take the first set 25-16.

The second set started similarly to the first, where Kenyon was able to go punch for punch with the home team early. The Tigers took an 11-10 lead near the midpoint of the second set after two kills apiece from Olivia Gumz and Aura Barinas led the way for the Owls.

Just like in the opener, Wittenberg was able to shut down Kenyon for the remainder of the set, ripping off a 14-6 run to take the second set 25-16. As a team, the Owls had nine kills in the second, but six errors led to a .073 hitting percentage.

Wittenberg took control in the early goings of the third set, jumping out to a 9-2 lead. A nice three kill stretch from Barinas, Gumz, and Hannah Schwemm cut the lead to 13-9, but it wasn't enough to tame the Tigers. The Owls amassed eight kills and a .054 hitting percentage in the third, but ultimately fell in the set 26-16 and the game 3-0.

Gumz and Rumpca-Veronese led the team with seven kills each, while Barinas added five. Rumpca-Veronese and Rachel Ferrara each turned in a service ace, while Schwemm dished out 19 assists for a team high.

On the defensive side, Arianna Flota made 12 digs while Lauren Blakemore and Schwemm each had eight. Rumpca-Veronese and Juliette Tomamichel each made one block.

Next up, Kenyon will head back to Gambier to host Carlow University (Pa.) on Thursday, October 9 at 7 p.m. from Tomsich Arena.
