Owls overcome slow start to conquer Celtics

GAMBIER, Ohio -- After letting the first set slip away Thursday night, the Kenyon College volleyball team stormed back to claim the next three and posted a 3-1 non-conference win over the Carlow University Celtics. The host Owls claimed the win by scores of 23-25, 25-6, 25-20, 25-23.

Aside from scoring the first point, Kenyon never led in the first set. The Owls did manage to tie the score at 13-13 and then again and 19-19, but the Celtics responded with two and three points, respectively, to keep their cushion before closing out the set.

Kenyon then switched gears and crushed Carlow in the second set. The Owls used three kills by Mariyah Rumpca-Veronese to jump out to a 7-1 lead. Later, with Kenyon ahead, 10-4, the Owls put the set away by rattling off eight straight points. In that run, Olivia Gumz had three kills and Juliette Tomamichel had two.

The third set started the same way, as Kenyon raced out to a 6-1 advantage. Carlow slowly chipped away at that Kenyon lead and eventually, following a 4-0 run, caught the Owls at 13-13. From there, a Carlow service error and two more kills from Rumpca-Veronese gave Kenyon a 17-13 lead. The Celtics never got closer than two points the rest of the way.

Carlow bounced back in the fourth set by taking leads of 5-1 and 10-5. At that point, however, the Owls went on an 11-0 tear that completely flipped momentum. Aura Barinas came to life and hammered down five kills in the Kenyon run. Carlow temporarily stopped the Kenyon streak with one point, but the Owls got right back to work, scoring the next four points with the last of those coming on another Barinas' kill that put Kenyon ahead 20-11. At the end of the set Hannah Schwemm served up two aces to seal the deal.

Throughout the four sets, Kenyon chalked up 56 kills, compared to just 19 for Carlow. Barinas topped the charts with a season-high 15 kills, while Gwynne and Rumpca-Veronese each added 11 to the Kenyon total.

The Owls also built a big advantage in service aces, too, out-swinging Carlow 18-7. That total was a season-best for the Owls, who got four aces from Joy Carstanjen and three each from Tomamichel and Schwemm.

Maggie Wolf dished out 26 assists for the Owls and Lauren Blakemore led the back row with 24 digs.

The win bumped Kenyon's overall record to 4-14, while the loss sent Carlow to 6-11.
