Owls start NCAC play with win over Wooster

GAMBIER, Ohio -- In its first North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) contest of the season, the Kenyon College women's soccer team got a goal at the midway point and held on for a 1-0 Saturday afternoon victory over The College of Wooster at Mavec Field.

The win bumped the host Owls' overall record to 7-1-3, and pushed the team to the top of the NCAC standings with a 1-0-0 start. On the other side of the field, Wooster fell to 8-2-1 overall and 0-1-0 in conference competition.

In the first half of play, Wooster gained the better of the shot comparison, as it launched nine attempts, while Kenyon managed six. Only one of Wooster's shots was on goal and just two found the mark for Kenyon.

After the first half back-and-forth, Kenyon opened the second with the game-deciding play. A foul on Emily Copeland in the middle of Wooster territory resulted in a free kick for Kenyon. After the ball bounced around in the Wooster box, it was cleared by the Fighting Scots.

Addison Szollosi then stripped a Wooster player and tapped a pass to Brooke Heis, who lobbed a pass back into the Wooster box. It took one bounce and Julianna Granetzke raced under it. From there, she headed it over Lucy Carlin, the Wooster goalkeeper who raced out to try to break up the play. The ball hit the right post and then crossed the goal line at 47:34.

The goal was Granetzke's second of the season and the assist was Heis' first.

The Kenyon defense, which played well all game, locked things down on the other side of the field, allowing just two Wooster shots the rest of the way.

The Kenyon offense was not done, however. In the game's 76th minute, a nice feed from Jenna Michel sprung Rafaela Plasa free inside the Fighting Scots' box. Plasa uncorked a shot, but Carlin made a diving save. The rebound came right back to Plasa, but her second effort sailed over the crossbar.

In all, the teams tied with 11 shots apiece and Kenyon held a slight 3-1 edge in corner kicks.

Kenyon goalkeeper Ariel Kite played all 90 minutes, made one save, and notched her sixth completed-game shutout of the season.

It will be nothing but conference games the rest of the way for the Owls, who will travel to DePauw University for next weekend's battle with the Tigers.
