Kenyon comeback falls short against Capital

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Playing in its first road game of the 2025-26 season, the Kenyon College men's basketball team made the short trip to Columbus on Wednesday night to take on Capital University.

Despite taking a narrow lead at the half, the Comets were able to claw back and take the lead, a deficit which the Owls could not overcome in the end, leading to the team's first loss of the season 74-80.

Kenyon was led on the night by first-year Nicholas Graves, who finished with a game high 23 points on six-of-seven (85.7 percent) shooting from the floor and four-of-five (80 percent) from three. Through the first 10 minutes of action, Graves had eight points as the Owls trailed 20-22.

The Owls rattled off an 8-5 run to take its first lead of the night at 4:48 in the first thanks to a full stat sheet of two-pointers from Langston Foster, Marius Mazeika, Graves and the reigning North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Player of the Week Bence Lendvey, setting the score at 28-27.

Mazeika and Jackson Burke each added four points apiece to help Kenyon take a 38-35 lead at the half. After 20 minutes, the Owls shot 46.9 percent from the field and held a 21-15 edge on the boards.

After the break, Kenyon opened up its largest lead of the game, a 53-46 lead with 11:42 left to play thanks to a 15-11 run. Graves and Burke each drilled threes in the stint, while Foster, Lendvey and Nick Valentino found twine.

In the next five minutes of action, Capital took control of the game with hot shooting and good defense. Thanks to a five-for-eight mark from the field, two three pointers and two steals on the other end, the home team charged to a 16-5 run to take a 62-58 advantage with 5:33 to play.

Graves took over the game down the stretch for the Owls, scoring 10 of the team's final 16 points with a pair of threes. However, Kenyon couldn't quite cut into the Capital lead, as the Comets was able to match the Owls in the final minutes of action, never letting the visitors come within four points. After being forced to foul but failing to make up any ground, the 74-80 score was set.

The 23 points and three assists for Graves are a new career high, and marks the second time in as many games a first-year has led the team on the stat sheet. Mazieka was the only other Owl in double digits, finishing with 14 points and tying Nick Nelson for the team lead in rebounds (8). On the other side of the ball, Burke swatted four blocks and added one steal while Mazieka swiped two.

Kenyon's record drops to 1-1 on the season. Next up, the Owls will head home for a matchup against Baldwin Wallace University on Tuesday, November 18 at 7 p.m. from Tomsich Arena.
