Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Kenyon pulls away after halftime to beat Bluffton

GAMBIER, Ohio – After a weekend of tough contests in Michigan, the Kenyon College men's basketball team returned to Tomsich Arena on Tuesday night to take on Bluffton University.

Although the Beavers were able to jump out to an early lead, the Owls came back to end the first half and pulled away after the break, taking the game 73-60 on the shoulders of great performances by Jackson Burke and Marius Mazeika

Bluffton (1-4) came out of the gates perfect from the floor, going 3-for-3 with two triples to take an 8-0 lead. Jack Corrigan Contay led Kenyon's (4-2) efforts to get back early, scoring five points in the next four minutes. As a team, the Owls ripped off an 11-to-2 run to trail 10-11 at 13:55 in the first.

Nicholas Graves netted six points down the stretch in the first, as Kenyon took over to lead 29-23 at the five minute mark. Mazeika chipped in five more in the final few minutes and at the break, the Owls were up 40-29. In the half, the home team shot 50 percent from the floor and 5-of-9 (55.6 percent) from three.

After halftime, Kenyon really began to find its stride on both sides of the floor. Langston Foster, Mazeika and Burke combined for 12 points to start the second, as the Owls fired off a 15-to-3 run to break the game wide open. On the other side of the floor, the Kenyon defense held Bluffton to three points and one field goal in the first 10 minutes of the second while forcing eight turnovers.

Seven different Kenyon players combined for points to close the game, led by Burke with five and a duo of Foster and Nick Valentino. In the end, the Owls were too much for the Beavers to handle, taking the game comfortably 73-60 for the team's fourth win of the season.

For the night, Kenyon shot 25-of-49 (51 percent) from the floor and 7-of-14 (50 percent) from three. Mazeika and Burke led on the stat sheet, dropping 14 points apiece while Burke added seven rebounds and a team high three blocks. Foster and Nelson also made it to double figures with 10, while Nelson led the team with 10 rebounds.

The Owls will be back in action on Saturday, December 6 to tip off the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) schedule at 1:00 p.m. on the road against DePauw.
