DePauw defeats Kenyon by dominating boards

GREENCASTLE, Ind. — The Kenyon College men's basketball team fell to DePauw University on Saturday afternoon, 84–62, as the Tigers used a fast start, strong rebounding, and consistent perimeter shooting to take control of the game early at Neal Fieldhouse.

DePauw established momentum from the opening tip, pushing ahead with efficient ball movement and multiple second-chance opportunities. Early scoring from Vince Nixon, Eli Ellis, and Reph Stevenson helped the Tigers build a 21-11 lead, while Ellis later knocked down a pair of threes that extended the DePauw advantage to more than 20 points.

Kenyon found offense through Nick Nelson, who attacked the rim for several driving layups, and from Marius Mazeika, who added energy on the glass and scored through contact. However, DePauw's steady outside shooting and advantage on the offensive boards allowed the hosts to carry a 55–30 lead into halftime.

Kenyon settled in after the break and delivered its strongest stretch of the contest. Lucas Friedman sparked the Owls with a pull-up jumper and a three-pointer, while Will McDonald added a three of his own and scored off the dribble to trim the deficit to 19 points. Hudson Fuller provided valuable minutes inside, contributing a hook shot, a layup, and a made free throw to fuel Kenyon's second-half push. Defensively, Ashton Bjerke and Jackson Burke each secured rebounds, and Kenyon generated several turnovers that translated into points.

Nelson continued to lead the offensive effort with tough finishes and mid-range scoring, while Mazeika remained active on both ends, collecting rebounds and adding a late floater.

Despite Kenyon's improved rhythm and balanced contributions, DePauw's frontcourt depth and inside scoring from Nixon, Sigler, and Stevenson helped the Tigers maintain their cushion throughout the second half.

Mazeika wound up with a team-highs of 16 points and five rebounds for Kenyon. Nelson finished with a dozen points and Friedman contributed nine.

Playing catch-up throughout the game, Kenyon could not find any accuracy from long range. The Owls were just 4-of-21 (19.0 percent) from three-point range and the Tigers cleaned up most of those misses. Overall, DePauw dominated the boards, out-rebounding Kenyon 54-24. On the offensive boards alone, DePauw racked up a distinct 17-3 advantage.

Led by 13 points from Brady Kunka, the Tigers had four players hit double-digit scoring marks and had seven players grab four or more rebounds.

With the win, DePauw improved to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in conference play, while Kenyon slipped to 4-3 overall and 0-1 in North Coast Athletic Conference action. The Owls have another conference contest on tap and that will be at home next Saturday against Ohio Wesleyan University.
