Owls top Oberlin, secure NCAC Tournament spot

GAMBIER, Ohio -- With a three-set win over Oberlin College in Saturday morning's regular-season finale, the Kenyon College volleyball team secured the No. 6 seed in next week's six-team North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Tournament.

The Owls, who defeated the Yeowomen 25-23, 25-15, 25-17, will move into postseason play to face No. 3-seeded Ohio Wesleyan University in a quarterfinal match that will be played Tuesday at Ohio Wesleyan, beginning at  7 p.m.

Kenyon (6-19, 2-5 NCAC) got better as the match went on Saturday at Tomsich Arena. Oberlin (4-21 ,0-7 NCAC) jumped out to leads of 5-3 and 6-4 in the early stages of the first set. Then the Yeowomen fell apart, committing four errors in the next five plays. Kenyon senior Aura Barinas threw a kill in the mix and the Owls forged ahead, 9-6.

Oberlin later went on a 4-0 run to tie the set, but Kenyon responded with its own four-point swing that included a pair of kills from Mariyah Rumpca-Veronese. The Yeowomen kept pace and even closed within one point. Again, though, Kenyon had an answer. Late in the set, Olivia Gumz and Barinas came up with crucial kills to solidify the win.

The second and third sets were not nearly as close. Oberlin raced out to 5-0 in the second set and Kenyon, once again, flipped the momentum, scoring the next eight points. With the score 11-9 in favor of Kenyon, the Owls created even more separation with a 12-2 run that launched them to a 2-0 advantage.

During that second set, senior Lauren Blakemore recorded her 1,000th career dig. She finished with seven digs on the day and improved her overall career total to 1,003.

In the third set, which the Owls ran away with at the midway point, another milestone was reached. Barinas, also a senior, threw down her 500th career kill. She wound up with seven in the match and now has 502 career kills to her credit.

Throughout the match, Rumpca-Veronese, a sophomore, led the Owls with nine kills and ten digs. Hannah Schwemm, a junior, led the team with 17 assists and also matched Blakemore's total of seven digs.

Kenyon's upcoming appearance in the NCAC Tournament will be its first since the 2022 season.
