Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Kenyon cruises for first NCAC win against OWU

GAMBIER, Ohio – After tipping off the North Coast Athletic Conference schedule last weekend on the road, the Kenyon College men's basketball team returned to Tomsich Arena on Saturday afternoon to take on Ohio Wesleyan.

Despite a rocky start on the offensive end, the Owls were able to steady the ship and build a comfortable lead by the end of the first half and preserve it after 40 minutes, cruising to a 76-56 win.

Both teams started out cold from the field, but it was Kenyon who took an early lead. Ohio Wesleyan was held to just 3-of-11 (27.3 percent) from the field in the first 10 minutes and 1-for-6 (16.7 percent) from three with four turnovers.

The Owls didn't fare much better, shooting 5-of-15 (33.3 percent) from the floor and 3-of-9 (33.3 percent) from beyond the arc, but jumped out to a 14-10 lead early thanks to six points from Langston Foster and a triple from Ashton Bjerke

Kenyon rattled off a 12-6 run in the next six minutes to take a 26-16 lead at the four minute mark in the first. Foster, Nicholas Graves and Jackson Maloney each dropped triples for the Owls only points from the field during the stretch.

Jackson Burke added four points of his own to lead the home team on a 12-4 run to close the first capped off by a three pointer from Foster for his twelfth point of the half. After 20 minutes, Kenyon was ahead 38-20.

The Bishops tried to make up ground after the break, springing to a 12-8 run to cut into the Owls advantage. Marius Mazeika and Graves each sank threes to keep Kenyon on pace, setting the score at 46-32 with 14:00 to play.

Kenyon was able to thwart any attempt at a comeback down the stretch, matching Ohio Wesleyan basket for basket to take a 62-43 advantage with 6:55 to play. Mazeika led the Owls with six points in the stretch, while Burke added four and Nick Valentino chipped in with three, shooting 7-of-11 (63.6 percent) from the field along the way.

Mazeika took over to close the game, scoring eight points in the final six minutes. Foster and Bjerke each added a three pointer for the team's 12th and 13th of the day, coasting to a no stress 76-56 victory in the end.

20 points for Mazeika led the team and marked a season high for the sophomore, while he added a team high six rebounds. Foster finished next with 16 points which included a career high six made three pointers. Burke was the other Owl in double figures, scoring 11 and dishing a team high five assists.

Kenyon moves to 5-3 on the season and 1-1 in conference. The Owls will be back at Tomisch Arena on Saturday, December 20 at 2:00 p.m. to take on Earlham College.
