Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Owls’ late rally falls short against Generals

LEXINGTON, Va. -- After a close first half, the Kenyon College men's basketball team fell behind by as many as 13 points in the second half of Tuesday's championship game of the W&L Holiday Tournament at Holekamp Gym. The Owls then made a furious comeback in the game's final minutes, but fell, 66-62, to the host Generals of Washington and Lee University.

Washington and Lee (9-1) earned its spot in the tournament's championship game by defeating Mount Saint Mary College, 94-39, in Monday's semifinal round, while Kenyon (7-4) got to the tournament finale by topping Marywood University, 93-67.

Tuesday's championship did not contain the same kind of semifinal offense for either team. Throughout the first 20 minutes of action, Kenyon held its ground by taking close-range shots and outsourcing the Generals in the paint, 20-6. The Owls, however, were 0-for-8 from behind the three-point line.

Early in the game, consecutive three-pointers from Washington and Lee's Connor Amorosi gave the home team a 10-4 advantage. Kenyon then rallied with an 8-1 run to move ahead by one. After that, the teams went back-and-forth, with neither moving ahead by more than three points. The Generals netted the last three points of the half, one that featured a dozen lead changes, and carried a 29-26 edge into the locker room.

Amorosi, who came into the game averaging 14.0 points per contest, led all scorers at the break with 14 points. On the other side of the court, senior Nick Nelson led Kenyon with eight points in his first 12 minutes of work.

When play resumed, sophomore Jackson Burke logged two more points in the paint for Kenyon, but, four minutes later, the Generals put together a 10-4 run that created separation. During the run, which spanned less than two minutes, the Generals got three-pointers from Bryce Breeden and AJ Thomas, a combo that sparked Washington and Lee to eventually move ahead by 13 points.

Facing that double-digit deficit with about five minutes left in the game, Kenyon got five quick points from sophomore Marius Mazeika to trim the margin to seven. Following that spurt, first-year Langston Foster took over the game, rattling off six straight points for the Owls, who pulled within two, at 64-62, with 43 seconds remaining.

The Kenyon defense then forced Washington and Lee into a turnover with 12 seconds left, but the Owls could not convert their final field goal attempt and the Generals capped off the game with two free throws.

Mazeika scored a team-high 16 points for the Owls. Foster had 13 and Nelson finished with 10. Burke tallied 11 points and 10 rebounds, recording his second straight double-double and earning a spot on the W&L Holiday All-Tournament Team.

Amorosi, who ended up 4-of-6 on three-pointers, led all scorers with a season-high 27 points.

Overall, Kenyon outscored Washington and Lee 42-20 in the paint, but long-range shooting accuracy escaped the Owls, who were 2-of-20 (10.0 percent).
