Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Owls prevail in tight battle with Tigers

GAMBIER, Ohio – Powered by Gavin Gumucio's five-goal performance, the Kenyon College men's lacrosse team secured a 10-7 victory over Colorado College on Friday afternoon in what was the Owls' 2025 home-opening game.

Kenyon (2-0) set the tone early when David Chintala opened the scoring at the 6:30 mark of the first period, giving Kenyon its first lead. Colorado responded with Wyatt Furda scoring off an assist from Max Vota, but the Owls quickly reclaimed control with Gumucio netting two goals in succession, including one assisted by Chintala.

The second period demonstrated Kenyon's offensive depth, as Nathan Kissela joined the scoring effort. Colorado (2-1) managed to stay competitive with goals from Matt Hudson and Karsten Nysarad, but the Owls maintained their advantage through strong possession play and defensive stands.

Taking a 5-4 lead in the third period, the Owls continued their offensive rhythm with Rollins Heath scoring a man-up goal assisted by Gumucio. Later, Jack McCarren added another tally with help from Miles Malawer. The team's coordinated attack and precise passing led to several well-executed scoring opportunities.

Gumucio saved some of his best play for the fourth period, adding two more goals to complete his five-goal performance. His scoring prowess, supported by assists from Chintala and Mike Kapral, helped secure the victory, as the Tigers did creep within one goal, at 8-7, with a little more than nine minutes left in the contest.

Kenyon held the edge in many statistical categories, including outshooting the Tigers, 59-35, and winning the ground-ball battle, 46-26. The Owls' ability to control possession and create scoring opportunities proved crucial to their success.

Following up on Gumucio's six-point game, Chintala tallied three points on a goal and two assists. McCarren and Heath each had two-point games, while Thomas Nelson was a perfect 16-of-16 in face-offs and lifted a game-high 13 ground balls off the carpet.

One of the more spectacular plays of the game came from Kenyon defender Owen Breen. With Adam Hall running out of the Kenyon goal to contest a loose ball, Colorado's Vota beat him to it and gained possession. Vota then turned around and fired on an open Kenyon net with 53 seconds left in the game. Before the ball reached its intended destination, Breen threw his body in front of it, blocked the shot and stymied any thoughts of a Colorado comeback.

Hall wound up making 13 saves for Kenyon, while Jackson Lesher was much busier on the other side, registering 19 saves for Colorado.
