Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Kenyon topples Transy to take 2025 season opener

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Looking to match the winning starts of the previous two seasons, the Kenyon College men's lacrosse team kicked off its 2025 campaign on Saturday afternoon, traveling to Lexington, Kentucky to take on Transylvania University.

Led by first-year Alex Haag and returning attackmen David Chintala and Gavin Gumucio, the Owls offense was firing on all cylinders to open the season, really breaking away in the second half and comfortably taking the game 18-9.

Transylvania (0-1) struck first at 12:53 in the opening quarter, but Chintala notched his first tally of the season on a man-up opportunity less than a minute later to set the score at 1-1.

The Pioneers retook the lead nearly six minutes later, but a 2-0 Owls' run with goals from Haag and Tanner Lewis put the visitors up 3-2 after 15 minutes. Thomas Nelson got off to a strong start, going 4-for-4 from the faceoff dot in the opening quarter.

Kenyon (1-0) continued its scoring streak into the second frame, as Haag got his second goal of the afternoon on another man-up opportunity, quickly firing a shot after a well-timed cut and pass from Lucas Flynn

Transy scored to end the run on their next offensive possession, but a nice pass from Miles Malawer and highlight catch and finish from Gumucio on the other end quickly restored a 5-3 lead with 6:45 to play in the half.

Although Lewis sniped his second goal of the half fighting through traffic, two quick goals from the Pioneers quelled any significant momentum near the end of the half, setting the score 6-5 with 3:55 to play in the half.

This narrow advantage didn't last for long, as Haag netted his third goal of the half in his first collegiate game quickly followed by Jack McCarren's first rip of the year to end the half up 8-5.

After halftime, the Owls hit another gear, as Flynn, Malawer, and Mike Kapral each found the back of the net to give Kenyon its biggest advantage of the game, leading 11-5 before Transylvania finally scored at 5:42 in the third to stop the run and added another with 3:33 to cut into the lead.

Malawer and Gumucio each scored their second goals of the game to close out the third quarter up 13-7.

Although the Pioneers opened up the fourth with two goals in 60 seconds, the Owls would not allow the home team to spark a run, as Chintala fired his second man-up goal of the day and Kapral also got his second as Kenyon led 15-9 with 9:23 to play.

Attackmen Gumicio and Chintala joined Haag with hat tricks of their own to ice the game, as two late goals from the pair and another by Haag iced the game and cemented the 18-9 victory.

Besides Haag with four and Chintala and Gumucio with three, Malawer, Lewis, and Kapral each turned in multi-goal games to open 2025. Defensively, Adam Hall had 12 saves and boasted a .571 save percentage. Nelson went 12-of-15 (80 percent) from the faceoff dot and scooped up a team-high eight ground balls, while Will Jordan chipped in with an 8-of-12 (66.7 percent) mark and four ground balls.

Kenyon's record moves to 1-0 with the season-opening win. The Owls return to Gambier for the home opener on Friday, February 14 at 3:30 pm against Colorado College.
