Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Heath, Nelson show up big in win at Centre

DANVILLE, Ky. -- The Kenyon College men's lacrosse team used a last-minute goal from Rollins Heath and a record-setting showing from Thomas Nelson to post a 12-11 road win at Centre College on Saturday afternoon. The victory pushed Kenyon's record to 5-0, marking the third straight season the Owls have gone undefeated through their first five games.

Kenyon got off to a fantastic start, going up 6-1 in the first quarter. Through those first 15 minutes, the six goals were scored by six different players, including one from Heath, a senior, and a quarter-closing man-up goal from Gavin Gumucio, a junior.

Gumucio scored again in the second quarter and the Owls went into the break with a 7-3 advantage.

Following halftime, Centre turned things around. The Colonels reeled off five straight scores to take their first lead of the contest, 8-7, with 3:27 left on the third-quarter clock. Kenyon, however, fought back with tallies from Mike Kapral and another man-up goal from Gumucio to reclaim the lead heading into the final frame.

From there, the teams went back and forth. Centre tied things up at 9-9 only to see Kenyon answer with goals from Hill Carter and Kapral. That two-goal Kenyon advantage lasted just four minutes, though. The Colonels came back with two more scores to knot things at 11-11 with 4:56 remaining.

That set the stage for Heath, who, with about 1:18 on the clock, broke from the right side and toward the middle of the field. He took hits from two different defenders, but bounced off and managed to get his shot off while continuing to move to his left. From roughly 15 yards away, he beat Devin Melton, the Colonels' goalkeeper, on a shot to the lower left side.

Nelson, who was 19-for-24 on faceoffs, won the final battle of the game, giving the Owls the opportunity to run down the rest of the game clock and exit with the win. Nelson, a senior, now has 88 faceoff wins this season and 754 for his career. That total eclipsed the previous North Coast Athletic Conference record of 744 career wins set by Oberlin College's Kinori Rosnow (2014-17).

Gumucio finished with a team-high three goals and four points. Heath also had four points. His total came on two goals and two assists. Matching Heath's goal total were Kapral and Carter. In net, junior Adam Hall made 14 saves.
