Owls exit Spring Classic games with a split

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- On their last day competing in the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic, the Kenyon College Owls split a pair of games. Tuesday afternoon, the Owls dropped a tight 4-3 game to Immaculata University and then, in the evening, they bounced back with an 8-0, five-inning, rule-run victory over Rochester Christian University.

The results of the day moved Kenyon to 11-3 overall, which includes a 9-1 record over games played in the Spring Classic.

In the second of the two games, Kenyon got to work early, scoring three times in the first inning, which featured a double from Keala Montgomery and an RBI single from Madison Buckwalter.

In the third inning, Buckwalter laced an RBI double to center. One batter later, Leah Kuban recorded an RBI groundout, giving Kenyon a 5-0 advantage.

Meanwhile, Amanda Harris continued her strong run in the pitchers' circle. She ended up tossing four innings of scoreless ball. She walked three, struck out three and improved her season record to 3-0, while lowering her ERA to 1.50.

Izzy Akin relieved Harris in the fifth inning and quickly notched three outs, two by strikeout. That gave the Owls the opportunity to end the game in the bottom of the fifth.

Buckwalter got things going with a triple. Kuban then launched a sacrifice fly that scored Buckwalter. After the Owls loaded the bases on a walk, a double, and another walk, Montgomery smacked a double to right field, scoring two and invoking the run-rule.

Not getting the chance to hit for the cycle, Buckwalter ended up 3-for-3, with a single, double, triple, one run scored, and a pair of RBI.

In game one, Immaculata used a three-run fifth inning to secure the win.

Kenyon, yet again, took the early lead with an RBI single from Maeve McLaughlin in the first inning. In the second inning, it was back-to-back triples from Brooke Avila and Montgomery that doubled the Owls' advantage.

The Mighty Macs broke through in the third inning, scoring one off of Kenyon starter Kylie Hamm, but the Owls responded in the fourth, as two wild pitches moved pinch runner Lindsay George from first base to third base. Avila then lifted what was a booted sacrifice fly and George came home to give Kenyon a 3-1 edge.

Hamm, who racked up a season-high 12 strikeouts across seven innings pitched, ran into trouble in the fifth inning. As it unfolded, a wild pitch led to an Immaculata run. Then a single, a hit-by-pitch, and a walk loaded up the bases. The Mighty Macs smacked two more singles up the middle, plating one run each time.

Kenyon had a golden opportunity to tie things up in the bottom of the sixth inning. With two runners on base, Avila singled and pinch runner Morgan Gardner raced from second to home, but was thrown out on a close play at the plate.

The Owls will now travel back to Gambier and take a break for competition. Their next scheduled doubleheader will be at John Carroll University on Thursday, March 20.
