Owls adapt, claim two more wins in Myrtle Beach

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- The Kenyon College softball team showed its resourcefulness Saturday in claiming two more victories and running its win streak to five games. First, the Owls unleashed the bats in a 17-5 run-rule drubbing of Keystone College and then, they used the right arm of Kylie Hamm to claim victory in a 1-0 pitchers' duel with Penn State Altoona.

The Owls, now owners of a 7-2 record, have been bludgeoning opponents with their bats through these early stages of the season. Prior to Saturday's second game, the Owls were hitting a remarkable .474 as a team, while averaging 15.8 hits and 14.8 runs per game. So, it came as no surprise the Owls racked up 21 hits and 17 runs in the win over Keystone.

The Purple and White scored at least one run in every inning of the game, with five-spots going up in the first, second, and fifth innings.

No one on the team is hotter at the plate than junior shortstop Arianna Jalomo, who posted a 4-for-4 game with two runs scored and five RBI. Over her last five games, she went 15-for-19 (.789) with nine runs scored and a dozen RBI.

Jalomo's four hits against Keystone were matched by senior Natalya Delsante, who also caught fire lately. Against Keystone, she was 4-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI, giving her 10 hits over a four-game span.

The top of Kenyon's order followed suit. Leadoff hitter Brooke Avila was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI. Right behind her, Keala Montgomery put up the same numbers. Further down the lineup, Madison Buckwalter also produced that very same stat line.

Kenyon pitcher Allison McCutchen, who came on in relief, earned her second win of the season after going three scoreless innings. She gave up just two hits and a walk. Amanda Harris closed out the final inning, running her hitless streak to six innings.

Game two was very different, but the Owls adapted well in dealing with the pressure of the one-run game. The defense was flawless behind Hamm, who tossed all seven innings, didn't give up a run, and struck out four to move her season record to 2-1. She ran into a little bit of trouble in the sixth inning, having Altoona runners reach second and third base with just one out. Hamm, however, got a strikeout and groundout to work out of the jam.

The game's only run was scored in the top of the fourth. With one out, Jalomo ripped a double to the left-center gap. A passed ball moved her over to third and then Maeve McLaughlin grounded out to shortstop, scoring Jalomo.

Kenyon had just three hits in the game and two belonged to Jalomo.

Two more games are on tap for Sunday with Kenyon taking on Thiel College at 1 p.m. and then Mitchell College at 3 p.m.
