Game Recap: Softball |

Kenyon cashes in on Sunday trifecta

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Anticipating bad weather for Monday, the Kenyon College softball team tacked on a game to its Sunday schedule, which already included a doubleheader. As it turned out, the Owls played their cards right and won all three. The results kept Kenyon undefeated at the North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex and extended the team's win streak to eight games.

Early in the day, the Owls needed a couple of extra innings to defeat Thiel College, 5-4. The second game saw the Owls score four in the top of the seventh for an 8-3 win over Mitchell College. And finally, in the nightcap, Kenyon put together an 11-run inning en route to a five-inning, 14-3, run-rule victory over Gwynedd Mercy University.

Throughout the long day, the Owls kept the bats going, cranking out 36 hits and a .426 team batting average. The hit parade was marshalled by senior Natalya Delsante, who went a combined 6-for-10 in the three games, including logging her 100th career hit in her last at-bat of the day. She scored two runs and knocked home five more.

Both Arianna Jalomo and Madison Buckwalter went 5-for-10 in the trio of games. Jalomo scored five times and had five RBI, while Buckwalter scored three times and plated one run. Leadoff hitter Brooke Avila notched four hits on the day and was followed up by three-hit performances from Keala Montgomery, Mara Thomas, and Allison McCutchen.

In the pitchers circle, Kylie Hamm went all nine innings against Thiel to get the win. Izzy Akin went the distance against Mitchell, and Amanda Harris pitched all but one inning in the win over Gwynedd Mercy.

Against Thiel, Kenyon had leads of 2-0 and 3-1, but a two-run sixth inning for the Tomcats tied things up and, eventually, forced extra frames. Both teams scored a run in the eighth inning, but in the ninth Hamm got a strikeout and two flyouts to keep Thiel from scoring.

In the bottom of the ninth, Kenyon got a sacrifice bunt from Maeve McLaughlin, moving Jalomo to third. Delsante then ripped a single through the left side, plating Jalomo with the winning run.

Against Mithcell, Kenyon again jumped out to an early lead, scoring three times in the first inning. As the game went on, however, the Mariners clawed back into it. After six innings, Kenyon was clinging to a one run lead, at 4-3.

That all changed in the top of the seventh, as the Mitchell defense imploded. Kenyon had just two hits in the inning, but three Mariner errors paved the way for the Owls to score four unearned runs and left little doubt about the final outcome.

In the final game of the day, against Gwynedd Mercy, Kenyon made sure things were decided much earlier. An 11-run third inning blew the lid off things and set the stage for a shortened contest. During the outburst, the Owls sent 16 batters to the plate. In addition to the 11 runs, those 16 batters produced 10 hits and a walk. Avila and Montgomery smacked back-to-back doubles and the rest of the hits were singles. The Griffins aided the Owls' cause by committing two errors, which made all 11 runs unearned.

About halfway through Kenyon's third inning, Delsante lofted a single to left field that scored McLaughlin. That knock was Delsante's 100th of her career, making her the 33rd player in program history to reach the milestone.

Kenyon still has a 1 p.m. game against Dean College on tap for tomorrow, however, rain and thunderstorms are predicted consistently throughout the day.
