Owls drop both tilts to Tigers in conference opener

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – The Kenyon College softball team started up its 2025 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) schedule on Friday night, hitting the road to take on Wittenberg University in a doubleheader.

The Owls had momentum in both games but could not seal the deal in either, as the Tigers took game one 9-1 and game two 11-5.

In the opener, Kylie Hamm twirled three solid innings in her eighth start of the season. The sophomore gave up just two hits and one run, but the next two innings are when things went south for Kenyon.

Wittenberg charged ahead to a five-run inning in the bottom of the fourth and never looked back. The Tigers added one more in the next inning before the Owls added their first run of the night. Keala Montgomery doubled to left field and ended up scoring on a passed ball, but it proved to be the only run of the game, eventually falling 9-1.

The Owls got off to a much better start in game two, taking an early lead with three runs in the top of the first inning. Brooke Avila led off the game with a single and advanced to second on an error. Montgomery came back with a single and a steal to put two runners in scoring position, and Arianna Jalomo ripped a triple in the right field corner to score both. She would steal home on the next batter by way of a wild pitch as Kenyon jumped out to its first lead of the day at 3-0.

The Tigers came back in a big way in the bottom half of the first, firing off four runs to reclaim the lead and added five more in the next inning to earn a 9-3 advantage. Kenyon had four hits to try and spark some offense in the meantime, but nothing came of it.

Montgomery mobilized the offense again in the fifth inning, starting the inning off with a single and advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt. Natalya Delsante singled and stole second two batters later to again but two Owls in scoring position. Maeve McLaughlin ripped a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Montgomery, and Delsante scored on an error to cut the lead to 9-5.

Wittenberg added two more runs in the sixth to ice the game while Kenyon did not get on base, ending the contest 11-5 and the day at 0-2.

For the afternoon, Montgomery led the offense with three hits and three runs, while Jalomo was not far behind with two hits and two runs. On the mound, Izzy Akin turned in the most innings of work (4.3) between the two games, giving up seven hits and two earned runs with one strikeout.

Kenyon will be back on the diamond on Saturday, April 12 for a home doubleheader against Denison University starting at 1:00 pm.
