Game Recap: Softball |

Early leads don’t hold for Owls

GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Kenyon College softball team built early leads in both games of Saturday's doubleheader with Denison University. The Owls, however, were unable to maintain their edge and the visiting Big Red walked out of the ballpark with a pair of wins by scores of 4-1 and 12-3.

In the first game, Kenyon posted a run in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore Keala Montgomery, who was 3-for-4 in that opening contest, got things going with a one-out double to right centerfield. One batter later, she stole third base. Senior Natalya Delsante then ripped a single down the right field line to plate Montgomery.

In the top of the second inning, the Big Red got that run back, utilizing two singles and an error. The Big Red tacked on one more in the fourth inning after Indy Workman doubled and later scored on a single from Annabelle Calderon.

One inning later, Denison doubled its output with a two-run fifth that put a cap on all scoring the rest of the way. The Big Red manufactured those two runs on two hits and an error.

Pitcher Kylie Hamm (4-5) took the loss for the Owls. She went the distance while yielding 10 hits and three walks. She struck out four and two of the four runs she gave up were unearned.

The Owls had six hits in the game, with three of them coming from Montgomery.

In game two, Kenyon jumped out to a quick start again, scoring three times in the first frame. With one out, Montgomery got things going by drawing a walk. That was followed by a single from Arianna Jalomo and another from Delsante to load the bases. Maeve McLaughlin then smoked a run-scoring single through the left side and Emma Cashell put a ball in play that scored two more, giving the Owls an early 3-0 lead.

Like game one, however, that would be all the Kenyon offense would muster against Denison hurler Sydney Silverstein, who held the Owls scoreless on just one hit over the final five innings.

The Owls had five hits overall and two came off the bat of McLaughlin.

Meanwhile, Kenyon pitcher Izzy Akin did not have her best stuff. She walked six through four innings, but also managed to give up just one run in that span.

In the top of the fifth, with Kenyon ahead, 3-1, the wheels came off for Akin and the Owls. Denison sent 15 batters to the plate. They pummeled a trio of Kenyon pitchers for nine runs on eight hits and three walks. The Big Red then tacked on two more runs in the top of the sixth inning to go ahead by nine runs, ending the game via the run-rule.

Akin (2-2) took the loss, being responsible for six of the runs given up.

The two losses put Kenyon at 14-8 overall and 0-4 in the North Coast Athletic Conference standings. The victories bumped Denison to 17-10 overall and 7-1 in conference competition.
