Game Recap: Baseball |

Owls split with Little Giants to start road stretch

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. – Starting up the first doubleheader of three straight road North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) series, the Kenyon College baseball team took on Wabash College on Monday afternoon in what was a makeup from a rainy day on Saturday.

After falling 19-2 in the opener, the Owls battled back to split with the Little Giants, taking the second game 7-1 to improve to 13-12 on the season and 6-4 in conference play.

Kenyon came alive in game two after a slow start in game one, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning.

Parker Gibbons got the party started with a triple down the right field line. Dustin Lee singled on the next batter to score Gibbons, while Tyler Nee and Ben Resnick got aboard for Will Nelson. Nelson responded with a clutch single up the middle to score Nee and Lee. Ben Russell capped off the great inning with a double to left field, scoring Resnick to beat the Owls hit and run total from all of game one.

Lewis Cropper got the start and was sensational for 4.2 innings, facing 19 batters and giving up just two hits and one run. He forced 11 fly outs and two ground outs to improve his record to 6-2 on the season.

The Owls added some insurance in the fifth inning thanks to two doubles from Nate Rosen and Lee. Rosen led off the inning with a whack down the right field line, and one batter later Lee knocked him in to set the score 5-0.

After Wabash scored its first run of the game in the bottom of the inning, Christian Harris came on and added a rock-solid 4.1 innings in relief, facing 16 batters and striking out three, giving up just three base hits.

Kenyon cemented the win in the top of the ninth, adding two runs. After Rosen walked, Gibbons smashed a home run to right field, his third of the season and his 13th and 14th RBI to save the split.

Game one started quietly for both teams, but it was Wabash who struck first in a big way, firing back to back six-run innings in the second and third frames. Frank Lynch got the start and was bumped after just two innings of work, registering just his second loss of the season.

Nee ripped a triple in the third to score Nelson to get the Owls on the board, while another triple from Luke Meister put him in prime position in the fourth, scoring on a groundout from Gibbons to set the score 12-2, marking the only scoring for Kenyon on the game.

On the day, Cropper and Harris led the pitching squad with a combined nine innings giving up just one run and five hits with three strikeouts and two walks. At the plate, Gibbons, Lee, and Nelson each led the team with two RBI.

Up next, the Owls will head to Springfield, Ohio to take on Wittenberg University on April 23, with game one of two starting at 1:00 pm.
