Owls drop two tilts with Tigers as playoffs draw near

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – The Kenyon College baseball team made the trip to Wittenberg University on Thursday night for a pivotal North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) doubleheader, as both teams are vying for a spot in the four-team conference playoff.

The Tigers took control of both games and never looked back, gaining 18-3 and 15-7 over the Owls.

Game two was Kenyon's better offensive showing, though it took longer to take shape than in the opener. Wittenberg got on the board first, however, scoring seven runs and knocking out starting pitcher Isaiah Vance

The Owls scoring didn't start until the third, when Luke Meister flied out to center, scoring Nate Rosen on a sacrifice fly. Ben Russell smacked his second career home run in the fourth to set the score 8-2, but the best inning of the game came in the fifth.

Rosen and Gibbons got on base by way of a single and a double respectively, bringing up Dustin Lee. Lee ripped a three-run home run to score three RBI, hitting his team leading sixth home run of the season while maintaining the team high in RBI.

Two batters later, Ben Resnick launched a solo shot for his second home run of the season and capped the Owls best inning of the day, trailing by a 10-6 margin.

Wittenberg came back with five unanswered runs between the fifth and seventh innings to regain its sizable lead. Rosen added a base hit RBI to score Jonah Feinberg in the top of the eighth, but the damage was insurmountable falling 15-7 in the end despite a 15-hit performance.

In game one, Kenyon took the lead in the top of the first inning, giving the visitors an early edge. Rosen led off the contest with a single, followed by Gibbons. Meister singled through the left side two batters later to bring around Rosen, while Resnick took a single to shortstop to score Gibbons, giving the Owls a 2-0 lead.

Peyton Hodges got the nod for the Owls and was roughed up in the next half inning, as the Tigers dropped six runs to regain the lead. Wittenberg came back with four runs in the bottom of the second inning, knocking out Hodges and opening up a 10-2 lead.

In the fourth inning, the home team added eight more runs to put the game out of reach. Despite Lee scoring in the fifth on a throwing error to first and 10 hits from the Owls, the Tigers took away an 18-3 win in seven innings.

For the doubleheader, Meister led the team with five hits, while Lee took home three RBI with his home run. Andrew Cantron had a strong outing in relief in game one, going 2.1 innings with two hits, three strikeouts and no runs.

Up next, the Owls will conclude their three-series road trip with a doubleheader at Oberlin, with first pitch coming at 12:00 pm on Saturday, April 26.
