Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Big Red overcome Owls with second-half surge

GAMBIER, Ohio -- After a tightly-contested first half Wednesday evening, the Denison University men's lacrosse team broke free from host Kenyon College during second-half play. The Big Red outscored the Owls 6-2 over the final 30 minutes and exited The Field at Benson Bowl with an 14-8 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) victory.

Kenyon came out charged up to face its rival and netted the first two goals of the game. Within the first five minutes, Alex Haag and Mike Kapral gave the Owls the early lead. Denison scored its first at the 9:00 mark, but, about two minutes later, Cameron Longway extended the Kenyon lead to 3-1.

The Big Red, ranked at No. 14 and No. 15 in two different national polls, then closed out the first quarter on a 5-1 run that saw five different players tally a goal. That spurt put the Big Red ahead, 6-4.

After that 10-goal first quarter, things changed dramatically the rest of the way. The high-flying offenses were neutralized by physical defenses on both ends of the field, and just 12 goals were scored the rest of the way.

Each team netted two in the second quarter, moving the game to the half with Denison ahead 8-6. Longway, who led Kenyon with two goals, two assists, and four points, had one of the second-quarter goals for the Owls. The other came from David Chintala, who registered his team-high 35th goal of the season.

From there, the Owls struggled to find cracks in the Denison defense. Although the Owls had nearly the same shot total as they did in the first half, only two of those second-half shots got past Denison goalkeeper Andrew Albert, who had 11 saves for the game.

The Big Red created all the separation it needed in the third quarter, outscoring Kenyon 4-1 in that 15-minute span. Jack Hines had two of those four goals for Denison, while the Owls' third-quarter score came from Hill Carter. Hines finished with a game-high four goals for the Big Red.

Haag, who scored Kenyon's first goal, also scored its last in the waning minutes of the game.

With most of the team stats fairly even, shot accuracy seemed to play a big role in the outcome. Denison wound up firing off 37 shots, with 26 of those on goal. Kenyon keeper Adam Hall made 12 saves on those shots on goal. At the other end of the field, Kenyon took 38 shots, with19 of those being on goal.

The loss dropped Kenyon to 9-6 overall and 4-3 in NCAC play. The Owls have one game left on their regular-season schedule and that will be Saturday at Wittenberg University.

The win moved Denison to 12-4, including a 7-0 mark in conference contests.
