Fighting Scots take two from Owls

GAMBIER, Ohio -- In a Sunday make-up doubleheader, the Kenyon College Owls and The College of Wooster Fighting Scots battled for positioning in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) standings. The visiting Fighting Scots squeaked out a 2-0 win in game one and then rolled to a 15-1 win in game two.

Those Sunday results dropped Kenyon's overall record to 18-14 and its NCAC mark to 3-9. In the other dugout, Wooster improved to 14-20 overall and 4-8 in conference competition.

In the first game of the day, Wooster went ahead with single runs in the third and fourth inning. A Cate Barkdoll RBI double to right field scored the Fighting Scots' run in the third and an RBI single from Sage Lammlein put Wooster ahead, 2-0, in the fourth.

Meanwhile, Wooster pitcher Jillian Meszaros was keeping the Kenyon bats silent. It wasn't until the bottom of the fourth inning that Kenyon recorded its first hit, which was a single to right field from Brooke Avila.

In the top of the fifth inning, Kenyon starting pitcher Kylie Hamm worked out of a bases-loaded jam thanks to an impressive catch from first baseman Keala Montgomery, who smashed into the fence to snare a foul ball near the Wooster dugout.

In the bottom of the sixth, Emma Cashell pinch hit and drew a walk. Montgomery then singled Cashell to second. Both runners moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt, but the Owls were unable to get either runner home and wound up suffering just their third shutout loss of the season.

Meszaros got the win, allowing just two hits and a walk. She struck out seven Kenyon batters. Hamm (5-8) took the loss. She gave up the two runs on eight hits and two walks.

In game two, Kenyon pitchers struggled with control. Over the first two innings, starter Jillian Messinger and reliever Allison McCutchen combined to walk six batters. Wooster bats took advantage of the situation, coming up with four hits and six runs in the top of the second inning. Three of those six runs scored on base-loaded walks.

In the bottom of the second, Kenyon got one run back when Kinsey White blasted her first collegiate home run over the left field fence.

McCutchen held the Fighting Scots scoreless in the third, but Wooster batters bounced back in the fourth with four more runs. Lynnsey Delio capped off the frame with a two-run homer that gave Wooster a 10-1 advantage.

The Fighting Scots did not let up in the fifth. They roughed up two more Kenyon hurlers for five more runs. The Kenyon offense was unable to respond in the bottom of the fifth, bringing the game to an early end.

Messinger (3-1) absorbed the loss, while Wooster starter Kaitlyn Hale earned the win. She, like Meszaros, allowed just two hits. She walked one and struck out one.

Kenyon's doubleheader on Tuesday, originally scheduled to be played at Otterbein University was cancelled, leaving just next weekend's doubleheader with Hiram College left on the Owls' schedule.
