Owls drop season-opening tilt with Terriers

SANDUSKY, Ohio – The Kenyon College volleyball team tipped off its 2025 campaign on Friday night in the first game of the Great Lakes Crossover tournament, taking on familiar foe Hiram College in a neutral site contest.

Despite coming just two points away from closing a key victory in the first set, the Owls couldn't hang on, going on to drop the opening frame and the following two, falling to the Terriers 3-0 to start the season.

Kenyon (0-1) started off nearly even with Hiram (2-0), who through the midway point in the first led 12-8, but after an attack error, a kill by Elaina Mardula and an ace from Aura Barinas, the Owls were right back in contention.

Barinas added another ace to set the score 23-22 late in the set, after Kendall Kirkbride and Sophia Menke chipped in two kills apiece and Olivia Gumz added one of her own. However, the Terriers quickly called a timeout and rallied for three straight points to take the opener 25-23.

Hiram jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the second set, but Kenyon was able to rally back for a 7-3 run fueled by kills from Barinas, Gumz, Menke and Hannah Schwemm to get back in the set but still trailing 10-8.

The Owls struggled down the stretch in the second, hitting .056 and committing eight attack errors, allowing the Terriers to take a 2-0 lead after a 25-20 set win.

Kenyon's struggles persisted in the final set, never able to get a rhythm going on offense and dropping the third 25-11 and the match 3-0.

As a team, the Owls amassed a .074 hitting percentage with 26 kills and four aces. On the defensive side, the squad added one block. Barinas led the team with seven kills, one block and two aces for ten points total, while Gumz was not far behind with six kills. Schwemm dished out 22 assists while Lauren Blakemore recorded 13 digs.

Kenyon has a quick turnaround for games two and three of the tournament, taking on Mount St. Joseph at 10:00 a.m. and Saint Mary's College (IN) at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday from Sandusky, Ohio.
