Owls fall to Lions, Belles in doubleheader

SANDUSKY, Ohio – After opening the season one night ago, the Kenyon College volleyball team had back-to-back contests on Saturday afternoon from the Great Lakes Crossover against Mount St. Joseph and St. Mary's College.

Although the Owls showed flashes of success in both contests, they could not keep up with the Lions or the Belles for the full matches, dropping the opener 3-0 and the second match 3-1.

Kenyon's best stretch of the day came after falling 25-18 to St. Mary's College in the first set of the second match, taking place under an hour after the first match's conclusion.

In a group effort that saw two kills from Kendall Kirkbride and Sophia Menke with one apiece sprinkled in from Juliette Tomamichel and Mariyah Rumpca-Veronese, the Owls opened up a 15-7 lead early on. Tomamichel added to her strong stint with three straight aces in the run.

The Belles responded with a 6-2 run to cut it close, but Kenyon snuffed out any comeback attempts with a 25-23 win to close things out for the 1-1 equalizer. The Owls won the hitting percentage (.140) and kills (14) count in the set, with Rumpca-Veronese leading the way with five of those kills.

Kenyon backed it up with a 6-1 run to start the third set, led by two kills from Tomamichel. St. Mary's retaliated with an 11-6 run of their own to even the set at 12. Despite taking a 20-16 lead down the stretch thanks to three kills from Tomamichel, the Owls could not fend off the Belles, allowing a 27-25 win in the set and a 2-1 advantage in the match.

Rumpca-Veronese shined in the opening stages of the fourth set, striking five kills as the Owls held tough, trailing 11-10 with the match on the line. Despite showing its best hitting percentage of the day at .316, Kenyon couldn't muster enough to beat the Belles in the closing stretch of the fourth, falling 25-21 and closing the match at 3-1.

For the second match, Kenyon boasted its best hitting percentage of the year thus far (.177) and number of kills (53). Rumpca-Veronese tied her career high with 18 kills with a .260 hitting percentage, while Kirkbride added nine kills with a team high .421 hitting percentage.

Kenyon was pushed to the brink right of the bat in the first contest against Mount St. Joseph, very similarly to last night's action against Hiram. The Owls and the Lions were deadlocked at 12 at the midpoint of the opener, as Elaina Mardula and Olivia Gumz got going early with three kills apiece.

The set remained tightly contested, with the Owls hitting .167 and the Lions .212 and holding a narrow 19-13 edge on kills. Kenyon had a chance to close the set leading 24-23, but could not fend off Mount St. Joseph, conceding a 7-4 run and falling in the first set 30-28.

After going down 4-1 in the second set, Kenyon rallied back with three kills from Gumz and two from Kirkbride to take a 7-6 lead early on. The closing stretch of the sequel was just as entertaining as the first, each team grinding to a 22-22 halt. MSJ again held the edge in hitting percentage, earning a .243 to .171 advantage but amassing 14 kills apiece. The Lions managed to slip away in the second as well, taking a 25-23 edge.

Similarly to their tilt with the Terriers last night, the Owls ran out of gas in the third, totalling only three kills. MSJ took an early lead in the third and never looked back, winning the third 25-16 and the match 3-0.

For the match, Gumz led Kenyon with nine kills, while Mardula was not far behind with six. The squad had much improved block numbers for the game, totalling eight with Maggie Wolf, Juliette Tomamichel and Becca Gwynne each recording two.

Up next, the Owls have their first true road test of the season, taking on Bluffton University on Wednesday, September 3 at 7:00 p.m.
