Rochester defense shuts out Kenyon

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The Kenyon College field hockey team struggled to come up with any kind of offensive attack on Sunday at Fauver Stadium. The host University of Rochester Yellowjackets, a team ranked at No. 25 nationally, unleashed a defense that was dominant in a 3-0 win over the visiting Owls.

The Yellowjackets (2-0) did not allow a Kenyon (0-2) shot throughout the game and did not yield a penalty corner either. Kara Houston started the game as the Rochester goalkeeper and Katherine Jensen subbed in for the final 22 minutes of play. That pair collected a combined shutout without being tested.

On the other end of the field, sophomore Sofia Chaves got the start for Kenyon. She played the first half, gave up two goals, and made five saves. First-year Lucy Baker took over goalkeeping duties in the third quarter. She allowed one goal and made seven saves in her 30 minutes of work.

In all, Rochester fired 32 shots and earned 19 penalty corners.

The Yellowjackets recorded their first goal of the game about seven minutes from the start. An initial shot from Anya Arseneau was blocked by a Kenyon defender, but the rebound came out to Grayson Honig, who found the back of the cage.

About 12 minutes later, the Yellowjackets doubled their lead, as Cassidy Romano used an assist from Sophia Cuneo in a play that developed off of penalty corner play.

The Rochester offense then came out of halftime firing away again. It gained four penalty corners within the first three minutes of the third quarter. The consistent pressure resulted in yet another Yellowjackets' goal, as Erin Foley controlled a deflected and scored from the right side.

Starting the season with two tough opponents on the road, the Kenyon team now returns to Gambier to play its home-opening game against Centre College on Saturday at 11 am.
