Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Colonels spoil Owls’ home opener

GAMBIER, Ohio – After facing two tough opponents on the road to start the season, the Kenyon College field hockey team hosted its first game at the Field at Benson Bowl in 2025, welcoming Centre College to Gambier.

Despite a flurry of shots in the third quarter led by junior forward Maren Lawrence, the Owls could not break through the Colonel defense, eventually falling 4-0.

Kenyon's (0-3) best stretch of offense came after halftime. Facing a three-goal deficit which was established in the first quarter and extended early in the third, the Owls fired off ten shots in the period and limited the Centre (3-0) attack to just one.

Lawrence headed up the Owls attack, ripping six shots in the third and five finding the cage. Six minutes into the quarter, she had her first two on back-to-back penalty corners, followed by a rocket from Casey Master that just missed the net.

Two minutes later, Kenyon had three consecutive penalty corners, all resulting in shots from Lawrence, two of which on target. Abby Golub added a try on the cage, but it was knocked away with the rest by Colonel keeper Eliza Hensley. In all, the Owls amassed seven penalty corners in the third, all coming up empty, which proved to be the difference maker.

Centre capped off the scoring with two minutes and some change left in the fourth to set the 4-0 final.

Sofia Chaves got the start in net for Kenyon and made one save in her 30 minutes of work. First-year Lucy Baker took over duties in the second half and stopped eight shots.

Offensively, Lawrence fired a game high nine shots, seven of those on the cage. Golub was next up with two on goal, tied with junior Gigi Johnson. As a team, the Owls tied the Colonels for shots on target (13), and doubled up the opponents in corners 12-to-6.

Kenyon falls to 0-3 on the season but will have another opportunity tomorrow, September 7, where the Owls take on Marian University at 11:00 a.m. from Gambier.
