Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Blake’s boot pushes Owls past Barons

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – After splitting a series of two hard-fought home games against nationally ranked opponents, the Kenyon College men's soccer team headed out for a mid-week road contest against Franciscan University on Wednesday night.

A back-and-forth first half saw dangerous chances on both sides, but first-year defender Grant Blake made the difference by capitalizing on a loose ball after a corner kick in the 58th minute to give the Owls a lead which they would protect for the final 30 minutes, taking home a 1-0 winner.

Blake's goal, the first of his young career with Kenyon (3-1-1), came by way of a corner kick caused by a blocked shot from Lucas de Alarcon. David Do lined up to take the kick, which was redirected off of a contested jump ball and fell right to Blake on the back post, who made no mistake and gave the Owls the game winner.

The Kenyon defense looked strong in the second 45, holding Franciscan (1-4) to zero shots on goal compared to its six in the second period. Although none of them found twine, the tremendous work by the backs and keeper Dominic Pratt helped lock down the team's third win.

In the first half, Franciscan held a slight shot advantage at 9-6, but Kenyon made the most of its opportunities with a 5-2 edge in shots on goal, with the Owls owning the most meaningful chances in the first 45.

Ethan Castaneda and Hyugo Todo tested the Barons keeper in the 11th and 13th minutes respectively for the match's first chances. After that, Kenyon's best opportunity to score came in the final five minutes of the half.

Justin Buchwalter drew three defenders and tried a shot on cage in the 44th minute, which was blocked and deflected right to Lucas Furlonge who tried to ping the bottom right corner but was just knocked away. On a throw in less than a minute later, Jack Commandeur's header found Joey Nigro for a great look, but his shot was turned away too, leaving the score at 0-0 heading into halftime.

For the match, the Owls owned an 11-2 advantage in shots on goal and 4-1 advantage in corners. Pratt turned away those two shots, while Andrew Adams led the team on the other end with three on goal.

Kenyon's next action will come on Sunday, September 14 at 3:30 p.m. for a road matchup against Hanover College.
