Quakers quiet Owls in straight sets

RICHMOND, Ind. – Coming off of its first win of 2025, the Kenyon College volleyball team hit the road for another tournament over the weekend, the first game tipping off on Friday night against Earlham College.

Despite showing some promise in the second and third sets, it was too little too late for the Owls, who dropped the contest 3-0 to the Quakers.

Kenyon's best set came in the third, where the team amassed a .204 hitting percentage and 17 kills, both bests of the evening. After a relatively quiet evening, Aura Barinas charged in the final set, leading the Owls with seven kills. The team took a 13-12 lead at the midpoint of the set and even took a 25-24 lead after going into extra points. However, Earlham was able to escape with the set 28-26 and the match.

The Owls took a lead to start the second set, getting ahead 9-8 thanks to two kills from Becca Gwynne and one each from Olivia Gumz, Sophia Menke and Barinas. Kenyon battled throughout the second set to a 19-19 tie thanks to 10 kills overall despite a .067 hitting percentage. The team chipped in two more blocks, both from Gwynne, but could not close out the Quakers, conceding a 7-1 run to close the set 25-20.

Early in the opener, both squads were deadlocked at seven. Mariyah Rumpca-Veronese, Gwynne and Gumz registered the early kills for Kenyon. From that point on, however, Earlham took control and rattled off an 18-7 run to take the first set 25-14. In the set, the Owls had just six kills and made six attack errors. The team did manage two blocks, which Gwynne and Gumz teamed up for.

For the match, Kenyon totaled 33 kills and 19 attack errors for a .112 hitting percentage. On the other side of the ball, the Owls made 4.0 total blocks. Barinas' stellar third set gave her the team lead with nine kills, while Gwynne and Gumz were not far behind with six and five, respectively. Schwemm dished out a team high 25 assists and 19 digs, while Rumpca-Veronese made two service aces.

Kenyon will duel with Rose-Hulman and Alma in a doubleheader tomorrow, with the first match getting underway at 11:00 a.m. with the second coming immediately after.
