Game Recap: Volleyball |

Kenyon can’t close against Rose-Hulman, Alma

RICHMOND, Ind. – The Kenyon College volleyball team played in its third doubleheader in as many weekends on Saturday afternoon, taking on the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and Alma College in back-to-back contests.

Despite showing flashes of success in both games, the Owls could not convert either one, falling to Rose-Hulman 3-0 and Alma 3-1.

Kenyon's (1-9) best stretch of the day came in the first set of the second game against Alma, which the Owls started very soon after the completion of the first game. The team jumped out to a 4-0 lead thanks to two kills from Kendall Kirkbride to get things started. The Scots rattled off a 14-10 run to tie the set at 14, as the Owls were out-killed 6-3 in the stretch.

However, Kenyon did not get discouraged and pulled together for a strong 11-6 run to take the first set 25-20. Mariyah Rumpca-Veronese led the team in the stretch with two kills, while Becca Gwynne, Hanna Schwemm, Elaina Mardula and Kirkbride each had one. As a team, Kenyon hit .333 in the opener, its best of any set of the day, with 12 kills to go along with it.

The Owls backed up its opening win with a solid performance in set two, but it wasn't enough to stop the Scots, falling 25-15. As a team, Kenyon hit .205 with 11 kills, while Alma rattled off a .364 mark with 13 kills and four service aces. Kirkbride paced the team in the second with four kills.

The Scots took a 2-1 lead after the third set, taking that 25-16, setting up a chance for the Owls to even it up and head to the fifth set. Kenyon was firing early, as Kirkbride continued her great game with three kills to take a 14-10 lead. Alma charged back with a 10-6 run to even the score up at 20, and eventually overtook the lead for the 26-24 victory in the set and 3-1 in the match.

For the second contest, Kenyon outhit Alma .166 to .151 and held a lead in blocks six to five, but the Scots 48-45 edge in kills and 9-2 advantage in service aces proved to be the difference. Kirkbirde led the team with 14 kills, a new career high for the first-year.

In the opener, the Owls struggled for the first two sets, amassing a -.032 and -.088 hitting percentage respectively. Rose-Hulman took command of the sets early and never looked back, taking both 25-15.

Kenyon had its best set statistically in the third, but it was not the result the team was hoping for. The team managed nine kills and just two errors led by Kirkbride and Olivia Gumz with three kills apiece. As a unit, the Owls totaled a .233 hitting percentage, but the final was locked up with a 25-13 defeat.

For the match, Gumz led the team with five kills while Kirkbride and Aura Barinas were not far behind with four apiece. Barinas and Juliette Tomamichel each fired one service ace apiece, while Menke headlined the defensive efforts with two blocks.

At the end of the two-day tournament, held at Earlham College, Schwemm was named to the All-Tournament team. She had 70 assists and 33 digs throughout the Owls' three matches.

The Kenyon team will be back on the court on Wednesday, September 17 at 7:00 p.m. to face off against Muskingum University on the road.
